Bloomberg WANTS trouble.
That's what the GOP asked for and Bloomberg's going to deliver. That is the only reason I can think of to deny the permit. He is guaranteeing chaos so the GOP can exploit it.

Mayor Bloomberg remained firm yesterday about denying UFPJ use of the Great Lawn, saying "it would destroy the park and we could not provide security."

"I suspect we'll win in court," he said.

1. Destroy the park?!
What a complete load of bull manure--enough to fertilize the Great Lawn for the next decade.

2. Check out the end of the article
They say there is some kind of secret agreement with the park conservancy (read: wealthy donors) that only six events per year will occur on the Great Lawn, including two Philharmonic and two Met presentations. How's that for elitist?

3. Damn Straight. And the media will hype and replay every word of the
screaming "Free the five Cuban Lumia Transgendered Nuns" people who inevitably insist on inserting their hobby horse agendas into what would otherwise be an exceptionally effective anti-GOP Demonstration. Mark me: these demonstrations will be used by the GOP and the media to get votes by shoring up their base.

4. I agree. This is Politics 101. It's so unsophisticated that I can't
believe they're so confident the public won't be able to figure this out.

5. It's too bad for Bloomberg that the cops hate him
Maybe they won't be too keen on arresting people for walking in a public park on a Sunday afternoon just to advance Bloomberg's career.

9/11 heroes, cops and firemen, have had NO raise in three years, no contract for two and half years. Way to go, GOP. Nice way to kick people in the gut and exploit them at the same time.
