Group plans anti-Edwards ads
WASHINGTON (CBS.MW) -- A business-backed group plans to join the campaign fray in coming weeks by running ads in key swing states that are expected to attack Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards for his pre-Senate career as a trial lawyer.

The new group, called "The November Fund," is co-chaired by Craig Fuller, who served as chief of staff to the president's father, George H.W. Bush, when he was vice president, and Bill Brock, a former Republican senator.

The U.S. Chamber of Commerce is a key sponsor of The November Fund, which is organized as a so-called 527 group. Such groups are prohibited by law from coordinating activities with presidential campaign staffs or political parties.

The New York Times reported the Chamber and other groups plan to spend $10 million on ads attacking trial lawyers, including Edwards.

John Kerry's selection of Edwards as his running mate on the Democratic ticket enraged some business leaders who have identified abusive lawsuits as a top priority for legislative reform.
...
Edwards has never disavowed the battles with businesses that were hallmarks of career as a trial lawyer in North Carolina. The candidate, who proudly describes himself as the "son of a mill worker," says he became a lawyer in order to stand up for ordinary people against powerful interests -- a theme that has echoed through his campaigns for public office.

1. Yawn. It's been tried against him before by Helms-backed Repukes
here in NC when Edwards was running against the Repuke incumbent, Lauch Faircloth.

Edwards *loves* to have the opponent spotlight his career--he just hauls out the kids and families that he's helped, and let's them speak. Then he shows the facts and figures of how trial lawyers *don't* cause insurance rates to increase. And shines a little light on the corrupt HMO and insurance industry.

He turned this issue around so fast on incumbent Lauch Faircloth (R-Dumbass) that Faircloth took the ads off the air here in NC. And he lost his seat to John Edwards.

Edwards is ready for this fight.

2. Everyone needs to read "Four Trials" and be armed for this "debate."

Bring it on, I say.

Wait until America hears the story of Valerie Lakey. When I was reading that chapter, and the account of that horrible day at the local swimming pool, I was shaking so bad I had to put the book down and collect myself for a moment. It was the most chilling thing, and I can't imagine the horror her parents experienced while watching their daughter struggle. :-(

5. I own it
We got two great guys on our ticket, Edwards was a great lawyer and a friend above all to his clients.

3. ahahah! bring it on Repukes
Edwards is probably jumping with joy right now - this is just what he's been waiting for. :bounce: This tactic has been tried against him countless times in the past - 1998 with Lauch Fraudcloth, and even in the early primaries. It fails every single time and in fact Edwards GAINS support. They're digging their own grave attacking Edwards on this, because he's gonna turn it around, knock them to the ground and beat em senseless with it.

7. It'll be Son of Swift Boat Vets. Bring it on.
They will concoct all sorts of stupid smears about sleazy trial lawyers (there are two classes of lawyers: The "good" ones, who represent corporations and Republican CEOS under indictment, and the "bad" ones, who represent the ordinary peons who were stupid enough to be injured, killed or otherwise screwed by said corporations). And then the campaign will turn its boat toward the enemy, again, and reveal them as liars and asses, again.

8. Don't leave out "good" lawyers like Ted Olson!
C'mon, the President had to sue to win the presidency. Wasn't Ted Olson, who represented Bush, a "trial lawyer" in that sense?

These people are beyond disgusting. Bring on the Edwards smears, you pieces of excrement. Every time you put some poor out-of-work-because-malpractice-insurance-is-so-high doctor on TV to sing the blues, we should show photos of Valerie Lakey, or of Jennifer, the infant whose delivery was heinously botched by her obstetrician.
