Motive for Cheney's stand on gay issues?
This is somewhat out in left field, but here goes. Anyone see the possibility of Cheney coming out in support of gay relationships as a precedent to his resignation. Here's how it plays out according to this outlandish (or is it?) theory: Cheney resigns over the split with Bush & co about the gay issue. This provides him a face-saving reason to step down as VP. If you look at what the Bush campaigners are saying about Cheney's stand...respecting Cheney's right to have a personal opinion and praising Cheney for supporting the president in spite of his own personal opinion. Cheney will be knighted as the person who took the fall to help his team...over a stand on an issue favoured by Bush's opponent.

1. Nah, he sees the writing on the wall, knows Kerry will win the election,
so he's throwing a bone to his daughter. I think it's personal, not political. Is it hypocritical? Of course, but that doesn't pose a problem for him.

2. Cheney is going to resign on the ground that he is too moderate for Bush?
And then the next vice president nominee is who, Genghis Khan?

Who does that help?

The Bushi campaign is falling all over Cheney's personal opinion while kowtowing to Bush because there is nothing else to do, now that he has reverted back to his original position. They praise HIM for personal beliefs, and they reassure HATERS that those beliefs aren't going to change his desire to see gays discriminated against in his official capacity.

4. If Bush wanted McCain or vice versa, it wouldn't come about by some
strange flipy flop on gay marriage. For one thing, McCain's position is against the amendment.

5. Cheney is a disastrous campaigner
He never gets it right. Never is really winning anyone over. While upsetting the base(he thinks he alone can get away with), he tries to win back some of the alarmingly disaffected Log Cabin Republicans. That he said anything at all proves they are in desperate straits indeed.

It is not strong enough to be an issue at all, but further sours the campaign aims to exploit yet not be seen to be exploiting the gay marriage flamebait.

That, at this late date, Cheney actually wants to mend fences with his daughter in this particular way is probably far-fetched. Probably more upset with the flak we are not hearing about from libertarians and gays and how nothing is really working for the team these days before the Convention.

You can just feel it now. Nothing is going according to plan.
