1. Wouldn't it be LBJ?
I've read that it was because he was on the ticket that Kennedy was able to pull off the win.

2. That's possible.
Many thought Kennedy was too liberal, young and "Catholic" to become president. I like to remind older voters of that now when I'm campaigning for Obama.

3. There was a split much like the Obama-Clinton split.
A lot of LBJ Dems didn't want Kennedy. Putting both on the ticket reconciled the two halves of the party. And LBJ went on to be more liberal than JFK on Civil Rights and poverty. Unlike JFK, he had lived it. If not for Viet Nam, he could be one of our nation's best presidents. And if not for a sniper's bullet, JFK could have been. :(

But then, GHWBush did run the worst campaign in history, because he expected to be impeached after the BCCI report was released in Dec 1992.
