Why does MyObama say not to expect a call?
I signed up, gave all my personal info, and apparently I have to go on a wild hunt if I want to help.

I would think that if the Obama campaign wanted to win, it would call its supporters. Then try to extract their talents.

This is at least my 3rd post on the topic. Still, not much more than crickets.

Does the campaign want to win or is it just playing games?

1. Maybe they figure supporters are competent enough
to call their local office themselves? Do you have any idea how many people are signed up at MyBarackObama.com? I'd rather they didn't waste the money on calling every person who signed up. Enough of us know how to volunteer ourselves.

2. You don't need a call to get started.
Once you're a member on the site - click on "Contact Voters". Everything you need to know to get started is right there. You can phone bank, knock on doors, host or attend events, etc. You can also look up your local county dem group, and start attending meetings to find out how you can get involved.

However, I would expect at some point, your local field organizer will contact you to volunteer. You'll also get emails telling you how you can get involved :)

6. Yes, I would expect that too.
A local coordinator.

Maybe that's who I should point my finger at.

I have a feeling I'll never get a call.

16. It took 6 months for me to get a call, but I'm involved
Why are you waiting on someone to call you? Get out and get going - this is your campaign too.

and they emailed me a week later with several options to help locally. Did you sign up under activism and fill out the areas you wanted to help in? (sorry if you did this-- I signed up in several different places before they emailed).

8. I don't remember the activism option.
I was looking for an option that would suit my personal talents but didn't find anything.

That's what I'm driving at, if we want political change I would think the campaign would at least be able to magnify the personal talents of the public.

Is that over their heads or what?

I'm afraid the campaign may become a self absorbant arena for personal advancement.

There are a lot of young people in it, they will probably become very egotistical under the stress.

At very least just give supporters a call. I have a feeling I'll never get one.

23. Ask not what the campaign can do for you.... - from a campaign manager:
Campaigns are not about you doing what you want. They are about you being a body willing to help out wherever the most help is really needed.

I can not tell you how many times when we were pleading for volunteers to help us make phone calls I heard someone pass and say they wanted their special talents to be used.

Campaigns are glamorous. They are about grunt work. And in a good one, everyone from the top down is doing whatever is needed at any point. I hate making calls. But there I was over and over again making cold calls.

The campaign isn't about YOU getting stroked. Its about YOU busting your ass for something you believe in. If you don't believe in it, that's cool. But don't come crying about how a campaign didn't stroke you enough.

Ask not what the campaign can do for you, ask what you can do for the campaign.

15. Not me.
However I admit I did get a scratchy automated recording in Spanish but I don't know if that is just a coincidence or not.

I'm just sayin' don't blame me if Obama loses because there is NOBODY contacting me in any way shape or form.

Am I useless because I'm in Chicago and we already know he'll win in IL? That's sort of absurd. What if one out of 10,000 people were political geniuses waiting for a call? Such a waste. I seriously think they are all too busy clawing their way up the ladder for the sake of their personal ambitions to see the overall picture.

But I don't blame them, I think they are young and under stress, and becoming arrogant is just what happens.

Sign on the door says: NO DRAMA QUEENS DEMANDING TO BE STROKED

By the way, all you have to do if you were serious about getting involved is go down to one the the local campaign offices and say, "where do you need a volunteer." NOT, "I want to do x," but rather, "what needs to be done?"

You find a local campaign office but looking on O's website, or at Obama groups, or you know...reading a local paper once in a while.

It's not hard unless you want personal special attention and want the campaign to stroke your ego rather than wanting to do anything that needs to be done in order to help.

Ask not what the campaign can do for you, ask what you can do for the campaign.

27. It probably depends on your local campaign office
Ours is calling people, especially people listed as supporters in the databases. And we are working very hard at keeping the databases up to date - today I spent six hours entering info from phone call lists, volunteer cards and sign in lists from special events. People from the Tallahassee office are calling all over the state to generate volunteers and team leaders to work over the next months to win this campaign.

Some areas do not have enough volunteers to make those calls or to keep the databases current - a real Catch-22 situation. If the calls aren't made, there aren't enough volunteers to make more calls.

I never got a call - I did get an email announcing the opening of the local campaign office. Until then, they were working out of the local DEC headquarters and had no room for volunteers to work. I went to the opening then back the next day and started working. Right now I am going in three afternoons a week. After Labor Day I hope to go in three full days a week

So if you do want to volunteer, find your local campaign office and go in there and let them know. Or check the BarackObama.com website for events in your area and go to one. Most of the events right now are recruiting and training days for new volunteers. Chances are they will put you to work immediately.

You can also check for your area to see if they are doing the Neighbor to Neighbor project. Here, we register at My.BarackObama.com and can generate walk lists for our neighborhoods. This helps with canvassing, campaigning and for contacting additional volunteers. I am not sure if this is nationwide or only in certain areas, so you might try it for yourself.

We are not going win this if everybody is sitting on their asses waiting to be asked to help. We all have to get our asses in touch with the offices and out there to work.
