Why Did They Do the "House" Thing but Not the "Draft" Thing?
I'm glad they pounced on the "house" thing which the media is now billing as the Dems think they have hit on a game changer, etc. But, how come they didn't pounce on the mother of all mothers, the DRAFT not-so-much-a-gaffee? McCain has done nothing to retract from that. Please tell me it's "house" today and "draft" tomorrow. House will go so far and be lost eventually. Draft is the gift that will keep on giving. Why are they not touching it? Dear God, they have to use this one. Minimum it will cause a flood of women independents and even repukes to Obama.

1. Possibly because there's a housing crunch and people vote with their pocketbooks?
McCain may not know how many houses he owns, but I know how many I do, and that number is zero (if you even consider zero a number).

2. Some very conscientious liberals agree with a draft.

3. That woman's question was putting me to sleep especially when she
started with the illegal aliens, but I'm not running for President and didn't have to stay awake. Buy hey. He did say he agrees with EVERYTHING she said, so you are right. The media should be asking him about it.

4. The problem with the draft thing - at least right now..
He did NOT specifically say he supported a draft, he said he didn't disagree with a woman's long comment. If we put that too far in the spotlight, they can wriggle out of it by saying he just meant he was agreeing with her overall POV.

This? This is concrete. This is cement. Much less wiggle room, plus a better soundbite.

When McCain stumbles and actually vocalizes all on his own that he supports a draft somehow - which he's nuttier than a candy bar, he just might, that's when we'll be all over that.

5. The draft thing is a trap.......

A) it is obvious that McCain wasn't even paying attention to the woman. She could have said "your hair is on fire" and he would've nodded in agreement. He can explain it away by saying that he wasn't meaning to agree with the draft part of her comment, just the rest of it. It's a gaffe, but a minor one.

B) if Obama says he would NEVER institute a draft under any circumstances, they will hit him with it because it would seem like Obama would take some options off the table in a crisis.

Be careful.

We can use the draft thing.... but we have to use it properly.

7. Obama took the $5m out of context and got away with it
If you saw McCain make the $5m comment at the forum it would be real easy to debunk Obama using it now; but Obama is playing dumb and using it. Why not the draft comment? In fact last night on KO he had on the guy (can't remember his name) who he often has who was Edwards communication chief. He's been very insightful on lots of stuff. He said "expect to hear about this over the next several days from the Obama camp". I'm waiting.........

6. Well, the draft comment was actually easier to defend than the houses comment for McCain.
Edited on Thu Aug-21-08 01:31 PM by eshfemme
I was hanging around digg a bit and articles concerning the draft were being dugg up but it was kinda a wash because the defense was that the draft comment was kinda a throwaway line at the end of a long rant about the treatment of Iraq veterans by a woman at a McCain town hall with McCain saying that he didn't disagree with anything that she said. They were basically saying that it was pulled out of context. There's video but depending on how it's cut, the person viewing it just gets their original opinion reinforced. So it's harder to gain traction with it unless McCain does something else to further confirm it. Right now, it's just "circumstantial evidence."

The house comment is a lot more clear cut and harder to deny despite the lack of video/audio because it was widely reported in the media and that was how the Obama campaign got the material. Plus, this plays into Obama's natural strength when it comes to domestic policy as McCain still has the POW card protecting his national security policy (and with no one examining actual policy, most people don't realize just how fucked up McCain's "foreign policy" actually is). Correct me if I'm wrong on any of this though.
