Well DUH - I just figured it out!!!!
If we were to think of politics as a game -

Bush has been repeatedly attacked by 527's throughout his 3 1/2 years - much more after the Iraq war began. He wants to silence them. Who could blame him - but he cannot attack them directly as what they say are not slanderous.
So, Karl Rove cooks up a particularily nasty recipe that Kerry is sure to find offensive enough to loudly condemn. It does not matter if what the swiftboatveterans are saying is truthful or not - in fact, the more obscene the lies, the better as far as Bush is concerned.
This way, Bush tries to get Kerry to condemn all 527's - and thus the swiftboat liars will fade away....and so will George's enemy - Moveon.org.

Nice try - but it failed George. Moveon.org is here to stay and they are here to keep your feet to the fire. If their ads are blatent lies - then by all means, sue their asses, but until then.......
Swiftboatliars however, have been fully exposed as the smear campaign artists that they are. So sad, too bad......

1. Nope. The Lies were very powerful against McCain, and Bush's
condemnation of the 527s is insipid and not getting him very far.

I doubt they couldn't have predicted that. I'm sure they wanted the Lying Vets to work. It wasn't set up to fail.

3. The 527 loophole was created by and for the GOP
They never, ever expected the moderates and left to get an infusion of cash from Soros and others and run ads of their own. It's been a horrible shock to them.

They don't want to cut off the 527 ads. They just want to cut of everyone else's access to them.

4. That's exactly right and when
they learned how much money the Dem 527's were making they tried to have them shut down. Ha!

They poo-pooed the internet and Moveon.org. Not anymore. WE are a power to be reckoned with. :hi:

5. You got it!
This is all about making the Dem 527s ineffective. We've been boxed in. When we raise *'s lack of service then we are not focusing on current issues. I think our side planned attacks on * and his desertion. It will be hard to do that now. (I have no inside knowledge) I like what happened today but I think Rove won on this issue.
