No matter who wins in Nov., will this country ever unify
or even just let go of all of the hatred? I was thinking the other day, if Bush is in office in Jan. 05, there will be riots that will make his last inaguration look like a walk in the park. If Kerry wins there will be much anger and hatred and an immediate move to start sliming Kerry and the "hit squad" will start working on Kerry much the same way that Clinton was assailed.

People on both sides are very very angry and all of our heels are dug in. What will stop this except for a genuine National Tragedy? Will anything? I don't see any other thing unifying us do any of you? I am really worried about this. Is this the beginning of the end for our great country? Is this yet another piece of the puzzle that will ultimately destroy us?

What do you all think?

2. The right wing media will do everything they can to divide America
Conservatives can never win when the country is united. Their only chance is to try to divide the people and turn Americans against each other.

4. Never
It seems this is part of the plan

They want to divide this country along economic, race, and religious lines. They think that they can control a significant number of votes to stay in office and widen the gap. Eventually suppressing those that do not agree with them much like the segregation of race and color that existed years ago

5. While I agree that it's a long shot...
I actually think a man like Kerry is in a position to make some inroads into the polarization.

The haters will keep hating, of course. But I think Kerry will actually do some things to reach out to the other side. He's not an idealogue, he's a very pragmatic patriot. He'll do first things first (which may make the left mad).

I think he has the makings of one of the best presidents we've ever had--certainly the best in my lifetime.

The only thing that I think would really hurt Kerry is a major terrorist attack after the first 6 mos of his term. Or assassination, which is a real possibility.

6. We are never unified

But the level of incivility is at orange. A dissaterous phenomenom known now as hate speech, blasted out by below average white guys, is a national tragedy.

7. I think it can. The country did after 9/11. Bush tore it apart on purpose.

New administration will piece it together again with the help of congress. I believe many in congress including Repugs are hoping Bush loses. Would like to see them come forward, but it's all about re election not whats best for our country. That is the thing I feel we don't have much chance of changing.

11. Don't you think that the division has reached epic proportions?
Hasn't it become more polarized, more hateful as of late? Starting in the 90's and carrying on through now? 9/11 - tragedy unified us for a short time, until the Iraq war drum started beating.

9. when has this country ever been unified?
Maybe for a few weeks in 1789? Right after we were attacked at Pearl Harbor? Right after 9/11, until Bush opened his mouth?

10. I have heard from WWII vets that during the depression people
were very helpful to each other. The Clinton years were too good. I guess we can't handle too much of a good thing. Kind of like one big dysfunctional family we have to destroy it.

15. Even during the Depression you had racism dividing the country
And during the Clinton years we had Gingrich and the impeachment.

I don't think we will ever be united. I'll settle for being an overwhelming majority.

12. I am more and more convinced that there are a lot of white folks in
this country who have a deep rooted fear of a truly mult-cultural America where your white daughter might date a black dude and your neigbor might be Mexican or lesbians. Change is scary. And of course there are other white folks who are already a leg up and sophisticatedly exploit this fear to make lots of money. And there are also various ethnic types who jump on this bandwagon, because they are new to the game and have confused materialism for the American Dream.

13. Interesting topic for sure.........
Amazingly we had a "genuine National Tragedy" on 9/11/01. I think the nation was fairly unified then and probably remained so until the run up to the Iraq War. The whole world in a sense unified in that there was widespread sympathy towards America. Bush blew all of that with the Iraq War.

I think 24 hour news stations and the way we sensationalize and dumb down news for entertainment purposes has really hurt the country in terms of unity. Shows like "Hardball" and "Crossfire" are all about volatility and who is loudest. Sean Hannity can't go ten seconds without interrupting a guest, and we see that kind of behavior in regular Americans having dialogue in their communities.

As a liberal Democrat, I think the only solution (for us) is to work night and day to render the Republican Party irrelevant. I dream of a day when the Democratic Party is the conservative party in this country. I dream of a day where there is a true progressive party that replaces the Republican Party. I want to see the day where Lieberman, Rudy Guliani, Arlen Specter, Olympia Snowe etc....are the true conservatives. A day when the neocons running this country are as much on the fringe and out of the mainstream as Ralph Nader.

14. I vote no.
We let those pieces of shit alone after Vietnam and Nixon and now they've come back to bite us on the ass (and everywhere else). Like goddamned undead (which I realize Dole is the Supreme Leeder of).

I don't see how we can afford to not drive them off the continent when the pendulum swings again. Guillotines are inexpensive and have quite a deterrent effect I've heard tell.

16. Free speech = Rush Limbaugh
And he and his ilk are deliberately divisive. But, it we remove his right to speak, we change America for the worse. However, if God should in his wisdom suddenly strike Rush dumb, that would go a long way toward unifying the country.
