Subtle headline: "Responding to McCain, Bush Plans Legal Action on Ads"

Notice how it is not "Responding to Kerry, Bush Plans Legal Action on Ads"...VERY subtle.

GOOD one, Rove...

http://story.news.yahoo.com/news?tmpl=story&cid=564&ncid=703&e=7&u=/nm/20040826/ts_nm/campaign_bush_dc

LAS CRUCES, N.M. (Reuters) - President Bush (news - web sites) on Thursday sought to ease differences with ally Sen. John McCain (news, bio, voting record) by promising to take legal action to stop a wave of ads by outside groups, including those attacking the war record of Bush's presidential election rival John Kerry (news - web sites).

The White House said Bush made the commitment to file a lawsuit against the Federal Election Committee when he spoke to McCain in a telephone call from Air Force One.

The Arizona Republican and Vietnam veteran has called on Bush to do more to end anti-Kerry ads by a group called Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, which has accused Kerry, McCain's friend and the Democratic presidential nominee, of lying about his Vietnam War service.

The White House made the announcement as Bush emerged from seclusion at his Crawford, Texas ranch and started a week of intense campaigning before next week's New York Republican convention with a raucous rally in Las Cruces, New Mexico, a state he lost to Democrat Al Gore (news - web sites) by just 366 votes in 2000.

3. It is
but Bush will perceived as a strong leader because he is taking legal action--whether or not it is ever again referred to anywhere. Perception is everything and this time, by refusing to back down over and over, realizing after Kerry's capitulation in "respect" for a fellow vet, he has now worked to turn it around and make it appear he is taking strong action. In this election perception is everything. Believe me--Kerry will be portrayed as the weaker.

5. Bush is the weaker one I think
If by "legal action", Karl plans some sort of injunction, court order, or what ever, it could end up looking ham fisted and very easily played into stifling "free speach".

If his plan is to go to FEC, then the contrast btwn FEC's head dissmissive attitude re Kerry's compliants, and the undoubtly fast respose a Karl request would get, would be counter productive also.

Aside from that what other "Legal Action" could he do and still come out having his boy look good.

6. I disagree because I believe that at this point perception is all
no matter how much one intellectualizes, the people are going to perceive what the Bush team propagandizes about this whole thing and they are good at it.

You cannot give these people an inch, for they will take a yard.

As much as people admire Kerry and think he is taking the high ground, I am sorry we are in a crisis here--he will be portrayed and subsequently perceived as weak becasue he "flip flopped" and the Bush company will stick that meme into people's heads over and over in various different ways. Wait and see.

George Bush does not back down in the face of challenge, etc etc for example.

We can only wait and if I am wrong I will eat my hat.

LOL off topic a little

I know a guy who raises red deer. He grinds up the antlers and sells the powder as a cure for arthritis.

2. Take Legal Action Against All Dem Indepentent Ads - not just GOP LIES

But GOP LIES equate to the Dem 527 group ads' truth - just ask US media.

8. Yup, he's going to tie up the courts for no reason.
I have every right to contribute to Move-on, because they will bring my issues to the public's attention. The candidates should have to listen to them.

In Kerry's case, he has the information to challenge the SBVT ads. But the problem is not the SBVT ad, its the media. Shutting down 527's mean nothing. Then we will have no access to media.

11. He is willing to stop the swifties now that they are imploding and the
backlash is starting. But he let it go on long enough to throw some dirt on Kerry and keep him from being able to talk about issues that voters care about.
