Jangling keys. Bad idea.
Edited on Mon Aug-25-08 11:01 AM by seawolf
We need to be kicking the SHIT out of John-boy. It's not the ideal way to run a campaign, but in the current political climate, it's the winning way.

But this little stunt is going to backfire and backfire HARD. And yeah, you can go on and on and on about how McCain is unfit to serve as Prez if the sound/image of jangling keys makes him flip out. It's even true. Problem is, the corporate/Republican-owned media is going to spin the ever-loving fuck out of jangling those keys, and they're going to spin it as, "Waaah, the nasty Democrats are attacking our brave POW McCain's PTSD." Millions upon millions of Americans who are independents (not right-wing "centrists," but actual independents) get their only news from the corp/Repub-owned media. Do you want that to be the only thing they hear about McCain's PTSD?

You want to hit him on the houses issue, and his PTSD being too severe for him to serve as president, great! We definitely need to slam him about that. Just find other ways of addressing each issue. I love someone's idea for an ad that addresses the PTSD as: "Do you want a man who'll freak out at the sound of jangling keys to have his finger on the nuclear button?"

And hey, you really want to sling some mud, go all the way back to the Repub primaries in 2000. Specifically, the South Carolina primary. Y'know, that huge BS campaign the Bushies put on, claiming that McCain's adopted daughter from Bangladesh was his own illegitimate offspring? (I believe they tried to claim the mother was a black prostitute?) Remember how that turned out? Here, I'll remind you:

You want to slam McCain but good, BRING THIS UP. I've phrased it as "If McCain won't stand up for his own daughter, what makes you think he'll stand up to corporate special interests for you?" (Used that on a friend of mine who's Republican. You could practically hear the little "this is a good point" bell going off in his head.)

Hell, you could add/substitute "frothing lunatic fundamentalists like Jim Dobson and ultra-right-wing loons like Philip Atkinson" to that sentence. And here's another idea for putting it: "If McCain was really a maverick, he'd have punched Bush in the nose for slandering his kid. Instead..."

Edited on Mon Aug-25-08 10:34 AM by seawolf
You don't like my opinion? Fine. At least bother to address it, and state why you disagree with it, rather than just trying to imply that I'm a wimp.

Congratulations, you are officially less mature, and less capable of rational discussion, than I am. And I'm an emotionally-stunted 20-year-old raised primarily by a right-wing idiot who wouldn't know "rational discussion" if it bit her on the ass. Impressive.

20. think about it
if you get this angry now, you might burn out

I've totally been there before. In 2004, and I took stuff so personally, well, it was not good.

Biden's talk of how he was surprised at just how hard a punch he could takem, and his father's advice about getting up after you're knocked down is doing wonders for me now.

Just think of this as adversity. You're 20 years old now, are you going to obsess about this one pink tutu for the next 60 years? You could be running for President in 2035, or something. Just brush this off.

But, this is just some friendly advice, you're a free man now. Maybe down the road you will have something to teach me what happens from doing it your way.

This person all but ordered us to strangle McCain, but that's not good enough for you. Nothing but your precious key-jangling will do. Everything else gets the "wimp" label, LOL. So juvenile.

Internet tough guy/bully. And like most of them, you probably can't fight your way out of a wet paper bag.

Congratulations. You're DU'er #2 to join my ignore list. #1 was added yesterday, for the same reasons.

22. No problem. I can't help myself...
...I see a bunch of people about to run headlong off a cliff and I have to warn them, even if they don't want to listen.

But it may already be too late. At least one high-traffic conservative site has already picked up on these threads and is using them to bash and discredit Democrats. If DU doesn't come together to stop this very soon, it is going to go beyond a point of no return.

also, I don't want people to think that dems are as pukey as repugs on stuff like this. but that is just my 'concern'. don't worry your head about it.

It can no longer be passed off as some kind of innocent gesture.

3. "the ... media is going to spin the ever-loving fuck out of jangling those keys"
Thank you!

Really hard to see why people are so insistent on this ONE method, when it has such a huge drawback.

6. I'm not down with the jangling keys plan, either
IMHO, we need to find another way to make the point. I'd rather not see us stoop to that level.

That being said, if the ONE THING standing between McLame and the presidency was me and a ring of keys... I'd jangle my heart out to keep him the hell out of the Oval Office.

12. It's
petty and immature. I thought I belonged to the better party. There are more effective ways to attack McGramps. And honestly, I can see that stunt backfiring pretty badly.

And any comments about me being a baby or whatnot is bullshit. I'm a Democrat in Texas, a liberal in a conservative suburb, and I live loud and proud like that. I don't give a shit what anyone around here thinks about my political affiliation. I've dealt with nasty fundy repukes up close and personal for many years.

But I deal with them by being the better person. I've won a few converts to our side that way, people who are sick of the nastiness of the Republicans.

Thanks for making the point.

We shouldn't stumble into that argument. Let's tackle it head on.

18. So says the "everyone stop talking about things I don't like!" wing of DU.
This topic is so perfect for DU.

We have one group of posters, to which I belong. This is the "don't tell me what to say" wing of DU.

Then there's the wing you belong to, the "everyone stop talking about things I don't approve of" wing of DU.

That's why every discussion like this one is predictable. You'll keep telling others what they should and should talk about, and they'll keep telling you they'll do what they damn well please.

24. I was amused by the jangling key thing
but the real issue from the same day which I thought would be a much better wedge was the DRAFT comment. It would certainly rally a large segment of the youth vote (I can say that having sweated out the draft in the 60's) So how many of you college bound 18 to 25 year olds would like to see the draft reinstated? McCain wants to do it to you. This is much larger than somebody's house keys!
