Naked Protesters on 33rd and 8th (NYC)
Edited on Thu Aug-26-04 11:24 AM by ApolloCreedLives
Channel 7 (ABC in NY) just reported that there were a group of protesters who stripped and started disrupting traffic outside Madison Square Garden. The police were quick on the scene and made their arrests.

And so it starts...

Yup, I just looked over my building's ledge (I'm on 7th btwn 31st and 3nd) nothing to see but the skycam. But this next week is gonna be interesting. Half the office is leaving town. Rumor has it we will have snipers on our floor due to the patio/ledge; but then its just a rumor.

8. Protestor arrested unfurling banner on the Plaza Hotel

A protestor identified as Terra Lawson-Remer (top) lowers herself to a waiting police officer after she helped unfurl a banner on the facade of the Plaza Hotel in New York on August 26, 2004. The 60-foot banner, with the words 'Truth' and 'Bush', was said to be critical of the Bush/Cheney administration's poor record of leadership. Two members of a protest group called Operation Sibyl rappelled down the facade to unfurl the banner. The Republican National Convention starts in New York on August 30. REUTERS/Peter Morgan

17. Live coverage on NY1
http://www.ny1.com/

Although they blocked out the naughty bits. But they are really stressing the word "naked" on television to titallate the puritans.

11. I saw that, and...
you'll note that the talking heads thought it was a hoot. This is a good sign.

I'm hoping most of the news, local at least, treats the antics as good sport and doesn't start shaking its collective head at these bad boys.

13. Why are the protests starting so early?
I'm excited to see what creative things the protestors can come up with. Some of the signs I've seen are very clever.

18. Let's get creative !

I love the Plaza banner!
That was creative and did not hurt anybody.

It called attention to the situation and got the attention of the media. IMO it was a slick move.

The naked,I'm not so sure how it will play with the "pure" of the Republican party. It did get people's attention.

24. The banner was cool
The nude thing irritates me.

I am fighting to get bush out of office, not for the right to run around nude in public.

It's just ineffective and stupid IMO

20. Naked is the way to protest in 2004
There is no way the FBI or Homeland Security can claim you came with anything but that which you made readily accessible to searches.

At least there can be no headlines like "PROTESTOR KILLED BECAUSE SS THOUGHT HE HELD BOMB UNDER SWEATSHIRT."

The nude protest types give me a pain in the ass.

It just gives the media yet another excuse to point out how "out of touch these fringe protesters are"

I don't see how standing around with your cheney hanging out is a positive message. The media will gobble this up and defecate it all over the left.

33. 'Often the critical element involved is the theater.'
Demonstrations always will be an important form of protest. The structure can vary from a rally or teach-in to a massive civil disobedience such as the confronting of the warmakers at the Pentagon or a smoke-in. A demonstration is different from other forms of warfare because it invites people other than those planning the action via publicity to participate. It also is basically non-violent in nature. A complete understanding of the use of media is necessary to create the publicity needed to get the word out. Numbers of people are only one of the many factors in an effective demonstration. The timing, choice of target and tactics to be employed are equally important. There have been demonstrations of 400,000 that are hardly remembered and demonstrations of a few dozen that were remarkably effective. Often the critical element involved is the theater. Those who say a demonstration should be concerned with education rather than theater don't understand either and will never organize a successful demonstration, or for that matter, a successful revolution.
