That's because he knows he isn't speaking to the crowd or even to the TV audience. He is producing a series of sound-bytes for the news coverage, Obama campaign ads, videos, etc..

The reality is whatever the TV news subsequently reduces it to.

I love stuff like that! (While typing this, he just winced because the crowd started cheering before he got to the end of a money endorsement line.)
