17. I am getting old because I remember lunch buckets
and as old as I am, I was not born in the 19th century.

There was a time when workers (and students) took their lunch in what today would be called recyclable containers.

These metal containers (and later plastic ones) saved money because you used the same one for years, plus they offered better protection of your food.

22. You are right
The lunch bucket preceded the lunch box. Didn't coal miners use the lunch bucket?

Thanks for the pix.

27. I think it's the environment you came out of too
I'm not that old and I know about lunch buckets. My grandfather carried a lunch bucket with him to the coal mine. My dad carried more of a lunch pail when he worked in the mine and later in the factories when the mine went idle. When my brother and I went to school, we carried a lunch box. So yeah, there are lots of containers to carry your lunch in. :)

9. Blue collar
Once upon a time, a lunch-bucket voter is one who works at a construction or factory job and totes along his or her afternoon meal in a pail of sorts. It’s a cute way of saying “blue-collar.”

I'm sorry these young whippersnappers don't get taught history anymore. Even if they don't learn it in school, they could ask their grandparents how things used to be.

20. Someone like my Dad, who hit the floor every day at 6 am for thirty-two years
and installed furnaces in the winter and fixed air conditioners in the summer twelve hours a day six days a week so he could put his kids through college. That's who they are.

28. A lunch bucket democrat would be blue-collar
Edited on Wed Aug-27-08 10:39 PM by doc03
worker like myself that works in a manufacturing plant and instead of going to Applebees for lunch and cocktails carries his lunch to work. That would be my definition.

on edit: Today most of us use a plastic grocery bag or a small plastic cooler.

On PBS, one of the talking heads said the speech was reminiscent of Hubert Humphrey, a quintessential lunch bucket Democrat.

more than once. More of a Reagan Democrat I would say, people in the rust belt states where Obama doesn't fare so well.

33. When I was a kid,
they were often referred to as lunch buckets; those metal boxes with a rounded top that the thermos fit into. My dad always carried one. I had a "Gunsmoke" lunch box, even though I hated westerns. Another attempt to turn me straight I guess; lol!
