I mean, other than bragging rights? I mean, if he can win an extra net 100,000 votes by, for example, subtly criticizing a woman's right to choose, should he do it? If not, why not? Isn't it more important to make sure he wins by a large margin than a small one?

Oops, wait, scratch that last question - I meant, it doesn't really matter whether he wins by a large margin or a small one, does it?

1. It means nothing
Electoral votes mean everything.

6. Okay, but then answer the same question as it applies to electoral votes.
That is, does it really matter if he wins resoundingly or by a sliver? If he wins, he wins, right?

2. If it's close the repukes steal the election like in 2000
if it's by a large margin they will be unable to pull that off

8. HE can even lose the popular vote AND take fewer electoral votes AND still win
All he has to do is keep McCain from hitting 270 electoral votes. That's teh bar. If that means one state does not have it's electors seated, doesn't matter. Obama wins no matter what so long as McCain does not reach 270 electors.

11. Not really, but it'd be nice to have a mandate.
If it's a blowout, it means you're entering the office with a less divided nation and it will be far easier for Obama to get things done.

17. Indeed. A mandate has never been more important.
The rethugs have fucked things up so much, there is an incredible amount of work to be done.

Getting the WH back is ruly the easy part.

18. The only strategy that counts is to make sure it's NOT that close. If it's close,
it's close enough to steal. And they will not hesitate. They've got too much at risk to let it all fall into the "wrong" hands.

Besides, to get the snot beaten out of them would send a VERY clear message. They need to be not just beaten but HUMILIATED. HOSED. BUGGERED at the ballot box. They need to be knocked so far down it looks like up.

20. The media will harp for four years on how he "squeaked" into office. There will be less
pressure on the Dems to actually do anything to fix the country.
