Paul Begala: Is McCain Out of His Mind?

John McCain needs what Kinky Friedman calls "a checkup from the neck up."

In choosing Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin to be his running mate he is not thinking "outside the box," as some have said. More like out of his mind.

Palin a first-term governor of a state with more reindeer than people, will have to put on a few pounds just to be a lightweight. Her personal story is impressive: former fisherman, mother of five. But that hardly qualifies her to be a heartbeat away from the presidency.

For a man who is 72 years old and has had four bouts with cancer to have chosen someone so completely unqualified to become president is shockingly irresponsible. Suddenly, McCain's age and health become central issues in the campaign, as does his judgment.

2. You know how all the news types have been BUGGING Caroline Kennedy about how they picked Biden? Well
I can't wait to hear how they picked Palin!

Let's get somebody on the hot seat.
Was it all McDim's idea?
Rove?
A committee?

I can't wait to hear the Heavy Duty Process that rolled out that name.

Wolf? Wolf Blitzer? Come on down!

10. and that ain't no rhetorical question
McCain must be:
A few sandwiches short of a picnic.
A few birds shy of a flock.
A few clowns short of a circus.
A few ears short of a bushel.
A few feathers short of a duck.
A few tiles short of a space shuttle.
A few shrimps short of a barbie.

11. Thats a great point
I always thought McCain would pick a woman if Obama didn't pick Hillary. However, I didn't think it would be Palin. She's under investigation for some scandal up in Alaska and she has no experience. I was just thinking about what a cynical choice it was by McCain. I didn't think about how it would highlight his age and health. Looks like a good choice for getting Obama/Biden into the Whitehouse

13. and whenever the "she's under investigation" thing comes up
today, the media has said "Well, her side of the story is that her sister was being abused by her husband, so that gives her a pass." Ummmm....her sister was being abused, so she fired someone who would not fire her brother in law? This is now standard abuse procedure, instead of reporting the brother in law to the cops? Especially insulting because of Biden's Violence Against Women act. Does anyone know more about this, because it sounds like the biggest load that she should get a pass because of that supposed "motivation".
