Another reason the GOP chose such a late date for their convention?
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 12:43 AM by Ohio Dem
School has begun in earnest across the country by now. I, for one, have a week in at this point. I'm a teacher, and I have been off all summer. I would have gone to NYC to protest Bush, but I have to work next week. The date the GOP has chosen have left members of the NEA with a choice of their own. Stay and teach, or protest and be replaced.

We all know what they think of the NEA. Bush is all about "vouchers" and "charter" schools. Education Secretary Rod Paige called the NEA "a terrorist organization." The NEA would love to protest the chimp in New York, but we're all at work right now. If I take personal days (that's the only way possible for me to even think about going), and I get arrested for holding a sign, I'll lose my teaching job. And they know it.

Besides the 9/11 thing, I think they were thinking about this when they planned the convention. Ask any teacher what he or she thinks about "No Child Left Behind (unfunded)." Or maybe it's a lucky break on their part. Either way, those bastards have done it again.

Fuckers.

1. It's ironic that Rod Paige is the only member of the Bush Administration
that is dumber than bush. And he's in charge of education.

3. That's true.
He's dummer than a box of hair. That's pretty dumb, if you ask me.

2. good point. students too!
historians will say Bush's decision to hold such a late convention was a monumental blunder.

He is going to get hit with a lot of shit next week and he has cut his recovery time. stupid move.

4. I hadn't even thought of students. Good point.

I think it may backfire on them, too. If we had any journalists in our media, I'd be sure. But I'm not sure.

10. students are just looking for an excuse to cut class
so it might be even more desirable for them to go protest.

5. that plus didn't one of their spokesmen say August is a good time
to market your product - I think this was said in relation to starting the Iraq attack asap so they could milk it's success in August for the 2002 election season.

12. Yes, it was Andrew Card...
...Bush's chief of staff, the same one who whispered in his ear at Booker that "America is under attack." He publically stated that they did not start their push for war in July because July was not a good month in which to start a marketing campaign (I'm paraphrasing, but not changing the meaning).

That right there was clue #1 that the Iraq campaign was something other than a righteous cause.

6. late convention
Some states have had to rewrite their regs because technically all candidates are supposed to accept the nomination by end of August...he does it on Sept. 1

Wouldn't it be funny if he didn't qualify on some ballots!!!!!!

9. The official story
was that they wanted to wait until after the Olympics because people would not be paying attention. But I believe this about the teachers more than that story. Of course he would not want lots of teachers there protesting no child left behind. It makes perfect sense! I wonder why no one in the media has mentioned this?

E2k should have provided ample proof.

11. At least in the NY area
School usually doesn't start until after Labor Day. Unlike us southerns who start at the beginning or middle of August.

13. Everyone mentions students and that is correct, but don't forget
College students would likely be a large share of any anit-war demonstration. Therefore if you hold the praise duby party after many colleges have started those students could not attend the demonstations.
That is three groups that have been effectively reduced by the timing.

I like the thought about &^$# not making the ballot in some states. That would be a scream, but I am sure he has that covered with his governator buddies.
