1. He was too busy beating his wife
I'm not making an accusation, but some people have said he did.

4. Robert Dornan's Skeleton Closet

Cashing Checks for the Virgin Mary
The House Banking scandal embarrassed a number of politicians, including Newt Gingrich (who bounced 22 checks), but Dornan deserves a prize for the best cheesy excuse in all of politics.

He said that he wrote the check he bounced to pay for a grotto of the Virgin Mary in his back yard. He won re-election to his heavily Catholic district.

Wife Beating
Dornan's wife Sallie has left him 3 or 4 times, and alleged in several aborted divorce suits over 16 years that he beat her. For example, in her 1961 divorce suit she stated under oath that he "dragged her about the home... by her hair and ... exhibited a revolver." In June 1966, Dornan was found guilty of a "violent attack" on his wife and was ordered to go to jail, though police records do not show him actually serving any time.

After Dornan's opponent in his 1992 re-election brought up these old charges, Sallie recanted, saying that alcohol and drug addiction drove her to falsely accuse him of beating her. She said "I am a Christian. I am a good wife. I am a good mother, but I sure as hell wasn't then. It's just very sad that Bob had to suffer what I brought down on his head through illness, major illness." Sad, indeed.

Beating Up On Democrats -- Literally
Dornan punched Democratic Congressman Tom Downey, a Democrat from Long Island, on the floor of the House of Representatives. Granted, that's a lot more entertaining than your average congressional debate, but many people consider it over the top.

5. Thanks for answering me
I am still shaking all over from watching him.

I can't stand him and he started showing all of these flags and saying that Kerry pissed on them. If Kerry took a leak on them then why is he still holding on to them? The flags looked new to me Jesus Christ I hate the rethugs.

6. Was a pilot in the late fifties, early sixties
in the Air Force, never flew a combat mission (at least that he
states in resume, and you KNOW he would if it happened).

Here is his "Vietnam" experience:
As a news correspondent, Dornan traveled extensively, including 12
food-relief night flights to Biafra in 1969. He also traveled to
Vietnam ten times, and Laos and Cambodia four times during the
Vietnam War, and ten times beyond the Iron Curtain.

So he "traveled" there, but doesn't go into detail. I suspect
he was not in uniform and never in that much danger.

Oh, BTW, Dornan was the congressman who used the Internet to
demonstrate how the private sector was SO much better at innovation
than the Federal Government.

7. He joined the military in '53
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 01:40 AM by hughee99
as a fighter pilot, but was off active duty by '58. He was with the media during vietnam, but did go there, and to Cambodia and Laos during the war... interestingly enough, after he left "active duty" he was in the USAF reserves as a rescue seaplane pilot and intelligence officer. I guess that explains his trips to Cambodia and Laos.

11. Dornan was defeated
by Loretta Sanchez...You have probably seen her on some of the cable news shows. The funny thing is Dornan is so mad, he filed papers to run against Rohrbacher, another conservative nut! but he later withdrew. I guess he skipped a few of his pills or something
