Kerry campaign attacks President over 'war honour he did not earn'
By Charles Laurence in New York
(Filed: 29/08/2004)

Supporters of Senator John Kerry yesterday warned of "blowback" against President George W Bush for the political "attack ads" by the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth which have damaged Mr Kerry's election campaign.

Sage Busines Awards

After weeks of denigration of the Democratic challenger's Vietnam war record, Mr Kerry's backers have responded with allegations against the President - including the claim that he was once photographed in uniform wearing a medal ribbon he had not earned.

As polls showed that Mr Bush had edged ahead of Mr Kerry for the first time, a pro-Kerry organisation labelled the President an "impostor" over the photograph, taken in 1970 and discovered in his father's Presidential Library in Houston, Texas.

The ribbon is an Air Force Outstanding Unit Award - which was not awarded to the 111th Fighter Intercept Squadron in which Mr Bush served until 1975, five years after the photograph was taken, according to the group US War Report.

2. This was posted earlier, but no matter, it's gets funnier every time I see
it. Wasn't awarded to bush*s unit until FIVE years after he served.

How ironic, today bush* is saying Kerry did his duty and he's (bush*) is being shown as a fraud.

Karma's a funny thing.

5. Get me a copy of AFR 35-10 from somewhere around 1968-1970
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 11:24 PM by Walt Starr
and we could get it into the U.S. media almost immediately.

Either that, or it would be buried forever.

One document holds all of the truth about this so far as Air Force regulations are concerned.

6. If that's the bar.

Okay then!! I'm sure someone here belongs to a VFW.

I will assume that there are attempts to vet this as we speak, and that is the obstacle.

Anyone consider the Library of Congress? Anyone in DC?

Also - Most campus libraries can borrow out something like this.

A little legwork and we might be able to crack it open.

Still, my hat is off to you. Very well done work.

7. I've got requests out there
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 11:29 PM by Walt Starr
We'll see what's dug up.

IF temporary wear of unit awards was a part of the regulations then I want to know why Bush wasn't wearing the PUC in that photo since his unit earned it in 1945.

8. I asked this on another thread yesterday
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 11:32 PM by Scorpious_Maximus

Walt, I posted this stuff on a few other boards to agitate the opposition.

DID IT EVER!!

The question came up; It is a B&W Photo, are we sure of the ribbon? Also, are we sure of the date of the photograh?

Or has that already been figured out?

9. The first time I ever saw that picture I knew EXACTLY which awards
Edited on Sat Aug-28-04 11:39 PM by Walt Starr
he was wearing.

Military ribbons are very distinctive.

I saw a photograph of Kerry wearing his awards. It was a black and white photograph, too. I identified all of his awards with 100% accuracy when I went to compare the awards they both earned.

10. Okay

Please don't misunderstand, I have full confidence that you are correct. It was a question I needed to clear for myself.

I have no real clue about how things work in the military, and leave those discussions to my betters.

Thanks.

Well then, let's see if we can find the document in question! I'm sure many here will be willing to help this forward.

I really think The Library of Congress would be a great place to start.

Please keep us up to date Walt, and again, thanks!

I am close to Brown, and could probably check this out next week.

Tell me exactly what we are looking for. I understand temporary wear, but like I said, I'm a bozo when it comes to the military.

14. Well, it's AFR 35-10
Look for a chapter on the wearing of awards. Copy the entire chapter. It would be in there somewhere.

13. Accuracy in this situation really doesnt matter
when one considers he was wearing two awards and was authorized only one. Dates do not matter either. His discharge shows only one award for his entire time in the guard yet he was wearing two.

22. Accuracy absolutely does matter
His discharge wouldn't necessarily show all medals or ribbons, especially the one in question because it was a unit ribbon, not a personal ribbon.

16. Purely guessing, Colorado would seem to have promise.
There's the Air Force Academy, which may have reference material including old regs. And there's the personnel center, which may store old regs as well as old records. Someplace must store the orders authorizing the regulations, so maybe they store the regs with them.

23. Hey Walt
Have you made requests for documents to http://www.vvaw.org/, the Vietnam Vets Against the War? Some of those members might know where you can get what you're looking for. Just a thought.
