got the latest issue of The Nation yesterday . . . almost puked . . .
there, on the inside back cover . . . on the ENTIRE inside back cover . . . was a full-page, four-color ad for Fox News . . . complete with a bar graph comparing their viewership to CNN's . . . and a button that says "America's Choice: Most Watched, Most Trusted" . . . and a tagline that reads "Stay with the #1 News Network for the Fair and Balanced coverage of the Republican National Convention you won't find anywhere else" . . . gag! . . .

guess all you can do is laugh . . . I mean, The Nation took Fox's money, but the chances of that ad convincing ANY Nation readers to tune in are slim and none . . . I hope . . .

the good news is that it looks like they'll have some interesting convention coverage, inclding daily blogs, protest reporting, and audio reports from inside MSG (The Nation, not Fox). . . http://www.thenation.com/

:wtf:

You sure this was an actual ad and not a parody in any way?

7. Not the first time
This was a huge controversy for The Nation about a year ago or so.

That time, it was the back cover, full color, the whole bit.

A lot of subscription cancellations followed, and there were numerous LTTEs regarding it.

The Nation spokespeople said they had a right to accept any advertising they wanted, that it paid good money, and why not take Murdoch's dough and put it to good use? But a lot of people didn't buy it (pun intended.

I for one felt that it sent the message to current readers of the mag that it had sold out, that it wasn't sticking to its principles.

OTOH, it suggests that perhaps watchers of Faux might pick up the mage and read it, thinking it is on "their" side. Hard for that to happen when there's usually an anti-boosh or anti-boosh-policy cover and the Faux ad is inside.

But, whatever.

Point being, this isn't the first time. That doesn't, of course, make it any more palatable (to some of us.)

9. I remember this, and I didn't like it much either.
Nor was I happy when Utne Reader started taking ads from Shell Oil. Thing is, they all have to raise revenue somewhere, and there aren't that many liberal corporations who can afford to underwrite that kind of publication. If you gotta deal with the beast to get your point across, I guess you just do.

But I like you, Tansy, it made me uneasy to see the Faux ad on The Nation. But, then, so did the fact that they didn't can Snitchens when he was cheerleading the Iraq invasion.

2. Those who subscribe to or read the Nation are probably going to laugh

That's just a case of Fox having extra advertising budget to blow. It's more of a joke, kind of an "in your face" from Ailes and Murdoch.

5. Kinda like Mall-Wort underwriting NPR......
I mentioned to my Public Radio station manager, that my contribution will be much smaller this year and every year because they accepted money from Mall-Wort. *d*mn* :-(

6. The Nation is probably the most valuable magazine we have
I, too, am glad they took Fox money. Their readers will laugh.

8. I'm with you, it's a valuable asset.
It would take an enormous influx of Murdoch money to sway the editorial staff.
