Scary thought
I remember back in the 2000 election cycle, one of the big topics was what would happen should Bush win the popular vote and Gore the electoral college. And it came to pass... just vice versa.

A month ago I heard a small peep, and this past week I've heard it almost everyday of if everything stays the same but Nevada goes to Kerry, then the electoral college ties at 269 each, which throws the presidency to the Congress for a decision. And we all know who's in charge there.

Just one of those nightmarish thoughts that keep me up at night.

Can you imagine, Bush losing the popular vote twice, once being installed by the Supreme Court, and the second time by a repug controlled congress...

1. I sustain my hope with the immense numbers of voters
registering for the first time that are unaccounted for in the polls. Non-voters don't generally bother unless they are really peeved.

I only hope I'm right, because I've thought about the situation you've described, and it gives me chills.

2. Timmy said the same thing on Meet the Press
There are lots of combinations that lead to 269-269.

Gore states + NH and Nevada
Gore states + NH and WV

Note that Gore states + WV and Nevada wins, without Florida or Ohio.

3. I think it is scary that there is any sort of closeness in this election
at all. It baffles my mind that people would still support a madman.

4. There are a bunch

of different scenarios where a 269 tie is possible. Gore states + WV and NH = tie.

There are even more if you factor in the fact that Maine splits the votes in a weird way. Say Bush gets more votes in district 2 but loses the 1st district and the state overall - He'd take one electoral vote. Combining that with other possibilities make for a crazy game.

There was a map of possibilities (and these aren't all the realistic possibilities. There are more). You have to browse about half way down the page.

5. The frightening part is that our Democracy
rests in the hands of so many people who cannot distinguish between what is true and what is not.

This phenomena appears to be directly proportional with the number of people who believe the often incoherent explanations of Religious morality and fables.

The selling of Santa Clause is a cinch once one believes in the Tooth Fairy.
