Pro-Kerry, anti-SBVT radio add - excellent - paid for by local attorney.
While driving this morning, I heard a radio ad condemning the SBVT campaign against Kerry.

It was talking about how a prominent Repub criticized Kerry for having not bled, yet he still carries shrapnel in his leg.

It states that the Repugs criticize Kerry for serving only 4 months on a swift boat while he volunteered to go to Vietnam which he didn't have to do it and he had already finished a tour on the Gridley.

It said they have not shame and it was very effective. I was surprised to hear it.

The ending stated - I'm Tom Riley and I paid for this out of my own money to set the record straight and I have not had any contact with the Kerry campaign regarding this ad. (paraphrasing).

This was in Cedar Rapids, IA on 94.1.

I didn't realized exactly what it was at first so I haven't really included the first few comments because I didn't catch them all (I may have been talking to my son).

This would be a good ad to put out on a larger scale (or one very similar to it).

1. Fantastic. Americans using their right of free speech is good
too bad airtime isn't free. If you can't afford to buy airtime, keep those cards and letters to the editors coming in.

2. Woot!
I was thinking of doing this myself. Not sure what the legalities are though.

3. I was thinking we should contact him and find out more about how
much he is doing, see if others could use the script (or make their own), etc. A larger group needs to pick up on this kind of thing.

5. You have the right as an individual to spend unlimited amounts
to promote your views.

7. I took out an ad in the paper once, many years ago...
And a reporter came and told me I had to have a PAC to do that. This was on a local bond issue. So I got a couple people together and started one, and all of a sudden there were all these limits.

The law is probably different now, but I suspect there are rules about how much you can promote a specific candidate/bill w/o running into the campaign laws.

It sounds like this ad was just addressing the smearvets, so maybe it wouldn't fall under the campaign rules.

12. I'm pretty sure that reporter was wrong. Interesting that he was giving

legal advice, instead of asking questions.

13. I hadn't ID'd myself in the ad
and no, the reporter wasn't giving legal advice, she was asking me if I knew what political advertising required in the way of disclosure.

I really can't remember the details, it was so long ago, but the lesson I took away from it was that I needed to educate myself on the current law about political advertising, which is defined as advertising which supporting or opposing an officeholder, a political party, or a measure (a ballot proposition). That's what this was.

I'm not at all saying such an ad such as the OP talks about here would be a problem. I'm saying think it's wiser to be aware of what the law is than to just assume an ad won't be covered by it, which was my original point.

6. It'd Be Great To Get A Link...
That's KRNA, isn't it? I think they have a link to listen (used to be a kick ass Rock 'n Roll station...hope it still is).

I hope this guy has either a website or an address or another DU'er knows him. Yep...these type of ads have to get on the air and in the wing and RED states! Average citizens speaking out carry a lot more weight on radio than they do on the tube or the papers...especially if they've gone through all the effort to pay for it themselves.

Any info would be helpful...maybe some of us could assist him or others who would like to do the same thing.

Cheers!

8. I think we will have to try to contact him directly. He is
a big attorney in town. The KRNA website didn't show anything that would help us.

He would probably be working with the local or state ABA.

Here is a link to an article/editorial on him in the Des Moines Register - he used to be a Republican.

11. Please Keep Me Informed On This...
From what I'm seeing, this is the type of person we want speaking out and LOUDLY.

I'll try to see what I can find as well, and if there's more info or others who are doing similar ads, please PM me, I'd like to help!

Cheers!

No webcasting link, though the ad may be playing on other stations in town. Is this guy local?

Here's some other stations in town. Some may webcast:

9. Kcrg local news,

Interviewed a local man who was with Kerry for a couple of months, he said they were on the border of Cambodia. It was like being on the Mississippi. Cambodia on one side and VN on the other.

I had e-mailed them about the 2 nights in a row of free SBV coverage. I suggested that since most of them had been discredited, maybe they ought to mention that. The next night they interviewed the local guy.

10. Maybe this is a tip about local political activism we should e-mail to
them. Good idea.
