1. Ive avoided commenting on this whole fiasco so far,
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 12:28 AM by orestes
but I have to say, the more i hear, the more I'm convinced:

The Palin family doesn't belong anywhere near the White House, they belong on an episode of Jerry Springer.

9. Blog reports that the son who is going in the service couldn't get a 2.0 average in high school,
so he couldn't get into college and play hockey.

Further, Todd, Sarah's husband, may have forced the kid to join the service because he was so mad about the kid's grades.

I'm kind of surprised that the two parents couldn't get any sense into this kid's head.

10. When I was 17, I dated a girl who went to an Assemblies of God church.
Edited on Tue Sep-02-08 12:45 AM by Progs Rock
All of the friends she had at church were not as holy as they liked to pretend-- put most party animals to shame. Going to church was just a dating service for them.

My girlfriend badgered me to go to church with her. I didn't particularly want to, but I was easily influenced at that time. I just sort of zoned out during the proceedings (hough watching people babble in tongues was amusing). Afterward, we'd go to my place and fool around. At least I knew the value of safe sex.

38. It's not so bad
Alaska's barely a real state. The Governor does stuff in Juneau, people in Anchorage and Fairbanks listen, and everyone else goes "wait, we have a governor?"

Alaska's the most staunchly purple state in the union, because half the people that live there are absolute hippy commune luddite liberals, or are oil-drinking animal-shooting right-wingers in huge cowboy hats.

Alaska's fucking weird, is basically what I'm saying. I think maybe Maine and North Dakota come near to its weird factor. basically unless you end up living there, you'll never know what's going on there. And living there's no guarantee, either.

The entire southern region is just a northern county of Massachusetts, basically....I live here; I know. Tons of Obama signs everywhere. And up in the north there are far more trees than people and way more laws about what to do with those trees, those animals, etc.

I thought we were weird until all this about Alaska came out.

Why would any decent parent want their daughter to marry this Neanderthal?

Baby Daddy Levi clearly has other priorities and would no doubt prefer to be left alone to continue his drinking and snow boarding and impregnating.

These kids are being pushed into marriage for political reasons only. And that makes me hate Sarah Plain and Tall all the more.

The Dems had a vetting committee that included Caroline Kennedy. Apparently the repukes were relying on some loser they picked out of a phone book. Unbelievable.

The only way this story could get more dysfunctional was if baby Trig were Levi's son and the baby Bristol's carrying was fathered by the biracial C-Ray. Sadly, the revelations have been sadder than the speculation. :(

70. Not according to Alaska state law, as reviewed in another DU thread yesterday.
Here's the thread:

http://www.democraticunderground.com/discuss/duboard.php?az=show_topic&forum=132&topic_id=6870507

And here's the operative line from that thread:

"If a person who is at least 18 years old engages in sexual activity with a person who is 16 years old or younger, he or she will be charged with sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree."

72. That doesn't make any sense.

"The age of consent is defined as 16 years old, according to Alaska statutory rape laws. If a person who is at least 18 years old engages in sexual activity with a person who is 16 years old or younger, he or she will be charged with sexual abuse of a minor in the first degree. This charge is a felony in Alaska. And remember, it does not matter if you did not force or threaten the other person into performing this sexual act with you. It is still a crime under Alaska statutory rape laws.

"Any person who is 16 years old or older who has sexual intercourse with a minor who is 13-, 14-, or 15-years-old will be charged with sexual abuse of a minor in the second degree. Again, this charge is also a felony."

The highlighted "16 years old or younger" is inconsistent with every other statement made in that article. It says age of consent is 16. It says it is illegal for anyone 16 or older to have sex with someone under 16.

The author clearly misworded the highlighted portion. It should have been written "younger than 16".

That, or everything else written in the article, as well as everything else I can google online, is wrong.

76. It's been superceded
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ages_of_consent_in_North_America#Alaska

The age of consent is 16, provided the older partner is not in a position of authority.

Alaska Statutes - Title 11. Criminal Law - Chapter 41. Offenses Against the Person - Sexual Abuse of a Minor
Section 436 in the First Degree (Unclassified Felony) ; Section 436 in the Second Degree (Class B Felony) ;
Section 438 in the Third Degree (Class C Felony) ; Section 440 : in the Fourth Degree (Class A misdemeanor)

Sexual Abuse of a Minor in the .... :

Younger minor under 13 + Elder minor under 16 ( more than 3 years between them ) :
Sexual contact = 4th Degree & Sexual penetration = 3rd Degree
Younger minor under 13 + Elder minor above 16 :
pornography = 2nd Degree ( younger under 16 vs. elder above 16 )
Sexual contact = 2nd Degree ( for elder minor oneself or if (s)he helps another person)
Sexual penetration = 1st Degree ( for elder minor oneself or if (s)he helps another person)
Younger minor 13-15 + Elder minor above 16 ( more than 3 years between them ) :
Sexual contact = 3rd Degree
Sexual penetration = 2nd Degree ( for elder minor oneself or if (s)he helps another person)
pornography = 2nd Degree ( younger under 16 vs. elder above 16 )
Minor under 16 + partner above 18 (civil majority) if cohabitant with authority or position of authority :
Sexual contact = 2nd Degree & Sexual penetration = 1st Degree.
Minor under 18 + parent or guardian above 18 :
Sexual contact = 2nd Degree & Sexual penetration = 1st Degree

55. Now THERE's a man with a bright future
... in the Sanitation Services sector.

But if McCain gets in, he's the new Deputy Director of Homeland Security.

57. These are certainly "low rent" people.
The whole family is coming across as a group of crazy right-wing rednecks from the sticks. The last thing we need is Sarah "Alaska First" Palin in the White House! The very idea is horrifying.

60. Why is this relevant?
Talking about Palin's opposition to comprehensive sex education or McCain's judgment in picking her without full vetting is one thing, but why do we need to know anything about the father of her daughter's baby? I'm sorry, but this is an undue intrusion into the life of a kid who had no say in Palin being picked for VP.

77. We report this because that's what they do to us...

Turn about is fair play.

Look at it this way... imagine what the GOP would have said if Chelsea Clinton were having an out-of-wedlock baby while Bill Clinton was still in the White House!

End of story.

And even though he's bad at it, he records music. I believe he is also paid to attend parties.

65. See, that's where sex ed could have come in handy...
There are ways of preventing that sort of thing, if your parents and community are responsible enough to teach you.

66. This whole things feels almost
like it's too ridiculous to be true. We are talking about the family of a possible Vice President of the United States of America. I can't believe any of this.

McCain and Palin are just a JOKE!!! How damn disrespectful to America and it's people that we are even having to discuss any of this. I just can't believe it!!!

Country First???? Bullshit....for McDumb....it POLITICS FIRST, and what a disaster he's made of it.

Thank God for Barack Obama and Joe Biden. I'm so proud of them.
