McCain: Fucked if he does. Fucked if he doesn't.
And fucked by his own impulsivity. The timing couldn't be worse. Heading into the convention, it's all bad news about Palin all the time. Sure the repuke hardcore present a united front. What else are they going to do? And yes, Sarah Palin will be nominated as vp and will probably give a highly "successful" barnburner of a speech that will have the MSM fawning and the delegates and fundies swooning, but that doesn't help enough. It won't negate the flood of bad Palin stories. It's just too messy to be sustained.

If they vetted her and chose to go with her, they're idiots. If they didn't they're idiots. And they're so stuck. No way she can drop out now. To the delegates she's mother theresa in an anorak with a hunting rifle. McCain can't risk the buzz saw of a bloody civil war at the convention.

But... he can't risk the deluge of bad news and keeping a tainted vp candidate on the ticket either. Palin has been a massive flop in every way save one: she thrills the base. His hope was clearly to thrill his base and present her as an independent reformer/maverick. That's a huge failure, and it's now too late to foist that one. She looks like the slightly nutty, messy extremist she is.

She's damaged goods. She's a demolished candidate walking. And she's taking johny "maverick" down with her.

How very satisfying.

1. The McCain Campaign is effectively over.
This is the perfect opportunity for Mitt and Pawlenty to
team up and mount a floor fight for the nomination.

6. Sorry I diasgree
The Repukes are notorious to coming out on top no matter what. I HOPE it is over but I am too cautious to say that it is yet. They seem to wiggle out of anything...much better then the Dems do. Plus the media is in their back pocket.

11. no they're not. that's largely mythology.
I can name a dozen repukes who have been undone by scandal just in the last 3 or 3 years.

3. I think they can still toss her under the bus - IF they make it look like HER choice.
"I realized this was too big an upheaval for our young family at this time, particularly in this day of the politics of personal destruction, etc,"

Yeah it could happen. But regardless, McCain is still screwen.

4. McLoon didn't appreciate that the evangelical nutbars live in la la land, and that
their bizarre fetish for this woman was not based on reality, or of deep knowledge of her or her qualifications. Look at how the fundies are suddenly worshipful of teenage pregnant girls--they're SAINTS, I tell ya!--as long as they're white and their parents are Republican, that is. He let the Dobson crowd vet her for him, and now he lives with the result. He has to eat his own cooking. And it tastes like shit. And I couldn't be happier.

10. Grateful? Is he actively trying to lose then?
Because that is the only way he could be grateful...

13. Obama/Biden STAY OUT OF THEIR WAY while they are destroying themselves!
Rule #1 - Don't interrupt while your opponent is busy destroying himself.

The pregnant pause allows them to do what they do best.....

14. The Pukes are setting themselves on fire at this point
and they're running straight for the explosives shack. This convention is going to be a disaster of epic proportions. Smirko the Wonder Chimp speaks tonight. That'll sure turn things around.

There is no need for O and Joe to do anything but remain above the fray.
