Speaking in tongues - see it for yourself

This might not be Palin's church, but this is the type of stuff they engage in.

18. I'm actually serious. I'm deeply embarrassed for these people.
Go to a rock concert. Smoke some joints. Have better sex. Anything! Live a little. If this is anybody's idea of a hot spiritual experience I feel truly sad for them.

31. Trust me, I know you're serious. It's just that I can relate.
I was raised in churches like this. I never felt compelled to fall over or start crying. I never "got" it. Still don't.

35. The ROFL's around here lend a whole new meaning to "Slain In the Spirit" though, don't they....

The Shekinah Glory is getting brighter all of the time in these parts.

Can I have a "Hallelujah"?

that her church speaks in tongues? There's a lot of variation from church to church in the non-denominational crowd.

13. She's officially nuts.
That stuff isn't even in the Bible. When people spoke in tongues at Pentecost people from various nations understand what the other was saying. They didn't babble incoherently like fucking morons.

27. That's why the Evangelicals think Pentecostals are heretics

Believe it or not - this is a wedge issue for Evangelicals.

You are absolutely correct - At Pentecost, there were people who *understood* the prophesying in different languages.

From an Evangelical standpoint, "speaking in tongues" without an interpreter is un-Biblical. And what they don't say out loud, but do say among themselves is that it opens Pentecostals up to evil spirits and demonic possession.

10. In all honesty
while I might not find this to be what I want, what difference does it make if it is what someone else wants in their life? We've got a diversity of religions and cultures in this country and to condemn someone because of a particular practice (despite how absurd it may seem to us) is not really a valid criticism or worth engaging in yanno?

This kind of religions abounds in this country and has the Catholic Church worried sick in Hispanic countries where it is overtaking and converting people like wildfire. So the appeal is not just to some strange bunch of ducks, but in fact to many people who find that speaking in tongues is a valid way of worship. It isn't for me, but who am I to condemn someone for how they worship?

14. John Ashcroft believed in this, too
He was AofG. He was the most powerful pentecostal ever (closest to the Presidency via succession) in the US before Palin's selection (should Palin be elected in November). His Dad was a AofG pastor and the President of the AofG-affiliated Evangel University.

I don't believe this to be special to religion. I think you just have to allow your brain to disconnect from learned speech patterns and fire away. Kind of reminds me of "Whose Line Is It Anyway?"

As noted upthread Evangelicals severely part ways with Pentecostals on this practice, and believe it is un-Biblical.

33. That's fine, and that's all good "pro family / pro life" stuff....

We're days ahead of the media's ability to sort out this whole ball of weird. Evangelicals and Pentecostals agree on many things. But I don't think her status as a babbling Pentecostal has gotten anywhere near the popular mindset funnel yet.

Evangelicals agree with Muslim pro-lifers too, but there's only so far they are going to walk on that common ground together.

24. Not "type of stuff" - THE STUFF HER SPECIFIC CHURCH REQUIRES

Wasilla Assembly O' God (some assembly required)

What we believe:

http://wasillaag.org/index.php?s=au&nid=3734

WE BELIEVE... The Initial Physical Evidence of the Baptism in the Holy Spirit is Speaking in Tongues, as experienced on the Day of Pentecost and referenced throughout Acts and the Epistles.

For those not familiar with species of right wing Christians - this stuff makes the Evangelicals uncomfortable, and many Evangelicals consider it to be a heretical practice.

Right wing Christians are not monolithic and while Evangelicals tolerate Pentecostals up to a point, and are part of the political coalition, Evangelicals regard Pentecostals with a certain degree of mistrust and disdain.
