LOL did anyone see Edwards comments on *'s "catastrophic success"
Edited on Sun Aug-29-04 05:55 PM by wndycty
I was just watching NBC's Nightly News and in the upcoming TIME magazine * was quoted as talking about our "catastrophic success" in Iraq and then they showed Edwards whose response was "I like most Americans have no idea what that means." We have a new Bushism "catastrophic success."

ON EDIT HERE IS THE QUOTE FROM TIME:

TIME
One of us asked you at a press conference last April what you thought your biggest mistake was. You didn't have an answer then. Do you now?

BUSH
When you asked that question, I was convinced you were trying to force me to say it was a mistake to go into Iraq, which I wasn't going to do. As sure as I'm sitting here, the right decision was to remove Saddam Hussein from power. The tactics going into Iraq were based upon a certain set of assumptions, like refugee flows, hunger, oil destruction. Had we had to do it over again, we would look at the consequences of catastrophic success—being so successful so fast that an enemy that should have surrendered or been done in escaped and lived to fight another day. I couldn't have sat down and said to you, By the way, we're going to be so victorious so quickly that we'll end up having to fight another third of the Baathists over the next year in order to bring liberty to the country. There's an idea that you can chew on.

trying to sound smart and comes off sounding even more idiotic.

6. Ya, know, I didn't think that was possible!!!
What word was he searching for when he came out with catastrophic? I think he meant to say INCREDIBLE because that is the most overused word I've heard since the word "like" came about to be substituted for "ah" or "you know" or whatever in the hell it's meant for.

17. Jerry Patterson won The Backside Of The Bell Curve Award...
last Friday on my blog:

http://tinyurl.com/56l6u

He's a real piece of work. He was in Nam 6 months (at the tail end), and his job was... are you ready?... liaison to Vietnamese Marines. This means that he worked in an office and arranged photo ops.

This is the BushCo idea of a war hero?

16. My theory...
Somebody gave Bushie a desk calendar for Christmas that has one new word a day on it. Give him a break, he is just trying to use his new found knowledge. Besides, it's too much work to read the definition, too. This week they are working on pronunciation.

13. Edwards said even more..."he's got it half right..."
Vice presidential candidate John Edwards (news - web sites) responded for Kerry and the Democrats. "President Bush now says his Iraq policy is a catastrophic success. He's half right. It was catastrophic to rush to war without a plan to win the peace," he said.

22. New headline: Bush says Iraq was catastrophic
Rinse and repeat.

I like the way Kerry has Edwards to go in low while Kerry stays above the fray. Edwards was a damn fine pick to be the next Vice-President!

18. Bush explained what it meant
"being so successful so fast that an enemy that should have surrendered or been done in escaped and lived to fight another day." Unfortunately, I have no idea what THAT means.

By the way, wasn't it Edwards who described one of Bush's policies as a "miserable failure"?

28. That's just as stupid as the original statement

Were we expecting to kill the whole damn Iraqi army ?

Or imprison them indefinitely ?

Hey, resident clueless, we're fighting an insurgency of guerrillas with low tech weapons, not a damn reconstituted army.

Edited on Sun Aug-29-04 07:22 PM by seabeyond
but this too isnt true. they knew this would happen. why, ???? they had just experienced the same thing in afghanistan. everyone took off and didnt let themselves stand there and fight and die cause of overwhelming u.s. military might. and here they are in afghanistan, put back together and fighting another day. as they did in iraq. and we watched them in iraq. as the u.s. went thru iraq we saw the soldiers strip out of uniform, leave them there, and hey, empty clothes, no dead body. we watched it happen

and further they talked this would happen. no way to stop it

asshole

and why did the media let this one go by without a follow up

31. Edwards is one of the few politicians who could actually say that . . .
Edited on Sun Aug-29-04 10:10 PM by mbali
He is so smart that he's not afraid to admit he doesn't understand something. One of the reasons he never made any serious missteps during the primary was that if he didn't understand a question, he'd say so and ask for clarification. Most politicians would never do that for fear that they would look unintelligent. Edwards is so brilliant, he doesn't have that fear. It's like he figures that if he doesn't understand you, the only possible explanation is that you're just not making any sense.

In this instance, he used that attitude to make Bush look ridiculous - implicit in what he said is "Not only don't most Americans have a clue what he's talking about, but I'm WAY smarter than he is and I can't figure out what the hell he means. What an idiot!"
