In 1994, there was a referendum to move Alaska's capital to... Wasilla
"Palin began her political career in 1992, when she ran for Wasilla city council, supporting a controversial new sales tax and advocating "a safer, more progressive Wasilla."<20> She won and served two terms on the council from 1992 to 1996."

"In 1994 a statewide ballot initiative to move the capital of Alaska to Wasilla was defeated by a vote of about 116,000 to 96,000."

(retrieved August 30, 2008 - hmmmmm)

And, from the Alaska Division of Ethics:

5. Now she's moving the state capitol to Anchorage/Wasila, job by job
State government jobs which have been located in Juneau since the Alaska became a state are being moved piecemeal by Palin to the Anchorage/Wasila (40 miles outside of Anchorage) area. The way she does it is that every job opening occurring in Juneau with a state agency, is posted for only two weeks in Juneau. If a "suitable" candidate is not found in 2 weeks, the job is then posted for Anchorage/Wasila. Of course, "suitability" is a sujbective call.

Juneau is the state capitol. The state legislature is in session mid-January through mid-April every year, with occasional special sessions. But the state agencies have always had their headquarters in Juneau. Sarah hates Juneau and comes there as little as possible. Anchorage is the largest city in Alaska. Comparing Alaska to Illinois, moving the capitol from Springfield to Chicago would be like moving the capitol from Juneau to Anchorage. Moving the capitol to either Anchorage or Wasila would requre a huge state expenditure to build office building complexes. Then you'd have all the private development of hotels, restaurants and convention center. Ah, the fortune that could be made by the Palins and their extended family in selling off various plots of hitherto worthless land, brokering development contracts, etc.

Reform candidate, my Aunt Fannie. She is the latest in a long line of GOP Alaskan governors/Senators who milk their political jobs for every under the counter dollar they can get from special interest groups.
