Faltering Bush plays terror card
Faltering Bush plays terror card

Kerry leads in key states as Republicans mass for convention. Paul Harris reports

Sunday August 29, 2004
The Observer

George Bush will take the stage at the Republican convention in New York this week to launch a last desperate fight for the White House. With two months to go, one of the bitterest and tightest elections in American history is now in its final stages.
The President is ready for the battle. 'I am not going to come in second place,' he told USA Today last week in a rare interview. But New York is not a welcoming place for Bush and the Republicans.

The atmosphere is tense in 'the city that never sleeps'. Roads are closed and anti-terrorist measures have New York in a vice-like grip. Many local people have fled to calmer climes.

Already several hundred arrests have been made by the thousands of police swamping the streets. With up to 250,000 protesters expected to march against the President and his policies today, the convention could become a symbol of America's division rather than Republican unity.

Things are not going to plan for America's 43rd President. A year ago Bush was expected to be invincible; instead he is fighting for his political future. Last week a devastating, dirty campaign against his Democratic opponent John Kerry's Vietnam record continued unabated. Shadowy groups, funded by Republicans close to Bush, have chipped away at Kerry's heroic Vietnam image, but the fight is far from won.

1. I hope he wears his flight suit, he doesn't sound as convincing without
it!

5. You are on to something with the flight suit
Bushie always sounds so tinny but with that parachute harness wrapped around he sounds very unBushlike. On the deck of the battleship he almost, kinda, sounded, well...different. Maybe the harness binds in body zones that are usually empty forcing his voice down an octave. Gives him a manly sound.

Wonder if the "Mission Accomplished" sign will make an appearance at the convention?:kick:

2. Certainly a different slant on this than in the US press
In the US the press wants us to admit that bush has already won because he will somehow use leadership abilities that he doesn't now posess.

6. What I find most interesting is that here on DU
And in a good deal of the media, everypody is pointing out how harmed Kerry has been by the Bush attacks , yet every observation from outsiode of the U.S. that I have read is indicating that Kerry is beating Bush, that the Kerry has handled the Swift Boat Attackers and netralized them, and that Bush is now responding blindly to try to do something about Kerry's lead. That he is in piss poor condition as an incubent, and that it is still Kerry's canpaign to lose, that Bush is fighting an uphill battle against Kerry.

Intersting differnce in views dependent on perspective.

7. Kerry's poll numbers seem to indicate he is standing firm
He took a slight hit, and the "backlash" affect has yet to show up in the same polls. And it will show up eventually, and Bush will drop some more as a net result of all this.
