The nationwide poll of 800 likely female voters was conducted by pollster Geoff Garin on Sunday and Monday on behalf of EMILY's List.
It found that women believe the Republican presidential nominee chose Palin for political reasons instead of her qualifications for the job, and that her selection reversed an experience advantage McCain enjoyed in past polls the group conducted.
"Senator McCain seriously misjudged women voters if he thinks he can win them over simply by putting a woman on the ticket," said EMILY's List president Ellen R. Malcolm.
Only 20 percent of those surveyed said they think McCain picked Palin because he believes he has the experience and qualifications to be a good vice president, while 59 percent said he chose her "out of political considerations," Garin said. In contrast, 50 percent said they believed Democrat Barack Obama chose Delaware Sen. Joe Biden to be vice president because he's qualified, while 29 percent said Obama picked Biden for political reasons.
Palin's selection also undermined a 35-point experience advantage McCain enjoyed over Obama in a poll Garin conducted before the candidates picked running mates. Fifty-two percent of women now find the Obama-Biden ticket has the experience advantage, while 37 percent give the experience edge to McCain-Palin - a 15 point advantage for Obama.http://blog.cleveland.com/openers/2008/09/poll_says_palin_veep_selection.html
