Dan Qayle was different
Dan Qayle was shallow and seen as a dumb blonde. I don't remember a pile of scandals.

5. Dan Quayle had a law degree--
Two terms in the House, and I think was in his second Senate term, and he was probably smarter than his propensity for gaffes let people think. Not that I'm a huge fan, but GHWB didn't pick someone completely unsuitable.

7. I have to admit that Palin is making Quayle look good, in the same way
that Bush makes Nixon look good.

Everything is relative. Particularly so for the Palin family.

8. he was on a winning ticket
I know it's fun to make fun of Quayle, but the GOP did win that one. So we should be careful about those comparisons.

9. McCain read the wrong page of the Republican VP selection guide.
Pubs generally use one of three standards to pick VPs:

1. If they're hopelessly corrupt, in a power-mad way, they choose a VP as impeachment insurance. Ergo, Bush I chose dimbulb Quayle and Tricky Dick chose Spiro Who?

2. If they're hopelessly corrupt, in a money-grubbing way, they choose someone as greedy as themselves. Ergo, Bush II chose Cheney.

3. If they're old enough to have been on Social Security before the previous election, they choose somebody who looks at least remotely plausible as a president. Ergo, Reagan chose Bush I.

McThuselah simply read the wrong page of the manual. Or maybe he thought his hopeless corruption (Keating Five, for instance) was a greater stumbling block than his age and cancers.
