Sludge: Daschle Ad features Bush hugging Daschle

DEM DASCHLE SEEKS BUSH BOOST; AD FEATURES 'HUG'

**Exclusive**

How bad has it gotten for Democrats at summer's end: A paid TV advertisement from Senate Minority Leader Tom Daschle, President Bush's top congressional foe, features the South Dakotan hugging and embracing President Bush!

While Democrat party officials of all stripes decend on New York City to blast the president, Daschle has quietly purchased air time in his home state for the minute-long campaign commerical -- a commerical insiders have dubbed: "Bush Hug."

Daschle faces a tough campaign against South Dakota Republican challanger John Thune.

"This is delightful!" laughed one republican official in New York on Monday morning. "Senator Daschle now concedes supporting the president can score him votes in the fall!"

3. This is where Hillary has the best chance
I would be shocked if she ever ran for president, she knows her negatives are high.

I think she would make a good leader in the senate.

2. Seriously, would anyone care if Daschle loses?
I know it's a lost dem seat and all, and I'm sorry for that, but really, what has this guy done for us that is any good??

I get all these fundraiser letters from the repubs saying "lets kick Daschle out of Wash. and really show the dems" and I'm always thinking: but, but, he's gotta be bush's best friend, he's such a wimpy dem to have in a power position"

4. SD is a pretty conservative state
But is has an all-Democratic congressional delegation. They didn't get elected (or reelected, as both Senators have done) by running as liberals.

7. Isn't this a bad idea?
He's giving credibility to Bush, and when Bush shows up in a Thune ad saying please elect my good friend John Thune, doesn't that screw Daschle if he's using Bush in his ads?

BTW, I think Thune's ads have been very good so far. I wouldn't be surprised if Daschle is an upset loser on election day.

The best senate ads I've ever seen were Wellstone's bus ads.

8. It also reminds us that Bush abused the trust Senate gave him in IWR!
Daschle comes fom a very conservative state. We absolutely need to retain his Senate seat. He is a good and decent man who must walk a tightrope--and remember, compromise is necessary in the Senate because Senate rules actually gives the minority some power--unlike in the House--which is controlled by the incredibly corrupt Tom Delay.

9. I guess I'm a political judo white belt but can anyone explain to me
the benefits of having a senate leader who has to get elected in a rethug state every six years?

11. It is better than having a Republican hold the seat
And it is good to have someone as leader who is not a lighting rod for controversy. Remember how we used to paint candidates as Newt Gingrich clones? No one does that with Hastert, because he knows better to let others do his dirty work.

someone who doesn't feel the very understandable temptation to shape the whole caucus' approach so that it doesn't hurt his own chances of getting elected in a GOP state.

How about a solid mainstream Dem in a safe seat--Dick Durbin, for example.

12. So what's wrong with bipartisanship?
Daschle is a veteran and this ad was about uniting in time of war.
Drudge and the reslugs are envious that Daschle is magnaniumous enough to show his patriotism extends beyond party.
Geeez!

14. 'unite behind troops, Bush'
It's impossible to be behind both the troops and Bush.
