Feingold: Bush Not Truthful On 527 Ad Issue
http://www.madison.com/tct/news/index.php?ntid=9191&ntpid=2
The Capital Times
By David Callender

U.S. Sen. Russ Feingold, D-Wis., says he's glad to have President Bush's support for new limits on campaign spending by outside groups like the Swift Boat Veterans for Truth, but says the move is a "political ploy."

In an interview Friday, Feingold said Bush tried to protect such groups when he signed the McCain-Feingold campaign finance reform bill two years ago.

<snip>

Bush told reporters last week that he didn't know the McCain-Feingold bill didn't cover 527 committees and he promised to work with Sen. John McCain, R-Ariz., to limit their activities.

Feingold said Bush is "flat-out distorting the truth when he tries to pretend he thought the bill addressed 527s."

<snip>

Don't you love it when a Democrat with a spine stands up for truth. Way to go Russ!

1. Russ kicks ass
I hope he helps Kerry in WI. He looks like he's almost definetely going to keep his seat which is great.

We need more like him. I hope he runs for president one day.

15. For example, I don't know how he voted on the IWR......
but even if he did vote for the authorization for war, he is not vocal that Bush lied to us about the threat of Saddam, right? Most, if not all dems, are giving Bush a pass for lieing to the american people before the war.

16. He voted against it
and has been very vocal about the deceptions here in Wisconsin. If the national media hasn't picked up on it, that's his fault?

13. How do you figure that?
There was only one vote against the Patriot Act - Feingold's. The vote was 97-1. That fact alone should make him a hero to Democrats (and those who defend our freedoms, regardless of party affiliation). I'm not sure there was anything about campaign finance in that act.

17. Feingold is awesome
And yes, I do vote for him as I'm in WI. The other day my husband ran into him at the airport. They spoke in line very briefly and then went their ways. A little later Feingold brought his sandwich over to where my husband was sitting and asked him if they could chat over lunch. He then proceeded to ask my husband what he thought were the most serious issues statewide/nationwide etc. and was genuinely interested in what my husband had to say.

5. why does Feingold have to point this out?
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 06:01 PM by Cocoa
is there some rule among the media that they can't point out Bush's ridiculous lies?

edit: and now that Feingold has pointed this out, will the media pick report it?

14. Why does no one correct the basic lie in Bush's argument?
MoveOn and Sierra Club aren't 527's. Doing away with them wouldn't stop ads against Bush. He must know that but keeps it "simple" to discredit all the truthful ads against him in the same way the sleezeBVs are discredited.

20. MoveOn is a PAC.
Isn't that different, with more transparent structure and reporting regulations than 527s?

Sierra Club is a 501 something, whatever that is.

25. Maybe but...
Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 10:42 AM by MaineDem
We're treating it as a 527 here. Hands off, no coordination, etc.

My understanding was that MoveOn is a 527 but I could be wrong.

Edited to add: Could it be a 527 but also have a PAC as part of its organization?
