Poll question: Now what's your opinion of outing gay republicans?
There have been some nasty battles here on the subject. Today we've seen the first result from the effort: Congressman Schrock from Virginia was outed and resigned.

4. Wrong is wrong
The ends don't justify the means. The only message sent to gays and lesbians by this is if you are gay, then you have to resign. We know better than this.

The message should be "if you are gay, work for a party that doesn't believe you're a pariah and a curse to society."

14. Who's calling for Barney Frank's
resignation? Nobody.

The issue is not resign because you're gay. It's whether such hypocrisy should be allowed to go unnoted because it's "personal" in nature.

If Jerry Falwell were committing adultery, should be keep it hush-hush?

19. actually Frank nearly lost his seat when he came out
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 08:28 PM by dsc
He was forced out of the closet in a sex scandal as well. A male prostitute named Steven Gobie ,while living with Frank, ran his business. Frank wound up censured by Congress. Had he been in just about any other district he would have been gone. Had he been anything but a masterful politician, he would have been gone. Thankfully for us, he is still in Congress.

20. You missed the point entirely
Edited on Mon Aug-30-04 08:31 PM by Dookus
you claimed the message we're sending is "if you're gay, resign".

That is patently absurd. The message is if you're a gay, bigoted hypocrite, we'll tell the world. Schrock didn't have to resign. He could try to weather it. Or, he could've come out on his own.

But when these guys actively try to hurt ME while simultaneously cruising for well-hung guys to go down on, I think it's perfectly permissible to make that known.

edit: this is in response to post #14. I clicked the wrong thing.

22. No I'm not
The simple fact is that the goal was to get this guy to resign or lose his office. We all know that. And it worked. So what is a gay in this man's district going to get from that?

But this subthread is about your assertion that the message is "if you're gay, resign". I disagree with that. Nobody here has said all gay congresspeople should resign. The very notion is silly.

5. I am against it.
As a gay man, I was placed in a situation to tell family/friends about my lifestyle.

I think this is a personal decision and it should be left up to the individual to tell or not.

No one should be outed publicly.

It's just a matter of respect.

I know it happens but it's right now no matter what political party you are associated with.

26. I feel it is wrong in either case
whether it's a DEM or a repuke.

It's personal. If someone wants to come out, then they should decide when.

The media, DEMS, repukes, TV, radio, newspapers, any god or god-like creature, shouldn't make this choice.

I am ashamed of nothing.

No matter what party you're affliated with.

"No one should be denied their fundamental human rights, either"

I'm not sure if I get this statement.
But I find it's no one's business, even if your in a public office, to know what you do in your bedroom.

If people want to share fine, but I don't think people need to announce what their sexuality is and it only seems like if you're gay, you need to tell everyone. I think that's unfair.

This man co-sponsored it. He was for denying a fundamental human right.

You know what's not fair? Being allowed to hide behind a shield of "privacy" while you work to attack others through the force of government.

I did not know the congressmen was co-sponsoring the amendment to ban gay marriage and now he has been outed hiself.

Correct?

Well, in one sense, that is one of the biggest flip-flops in history.

However, I do think it's still wrong to out other people though I do think that is was right to "out" the congressmen.

If that makes sense.

when? After they die, like J. Edgar Hoover and Roy Cohn?

And how many closeted gays have died and it was NEVER revealed? I don't think there's any evidence to support the idea that "it always comes out".

16. Sitting firmly on the fence on this one!
Outing closeted Pubbies seems like the best way to expose those sanctimonious hypocrites for what they are, but outing them could also harm wives and children who are blameless. Outing anybody can devastate families. It's just so tempting when the guys is a screaming hypocrite who is so busy condemning the rest of the human race to hell that he's forgotten to look at his own life.

17. If the specific Republican is more enlightened than the Party...
...tends to be on Gay issues, even if he or she fell short of having a really good position, I think I would oppose an outing. But all closeted politicians who try to gain political favor by directly pandering to homophobia are, in a classical sense, demagogues and therefor dangerous. They court power over principles. They should be exposed for the good of our Democracy.

18. For. I've never been for outing people who are minding their own business
Even though all outing probably benefits the gay community in the long run, I'm not for it unless someone is just asking for it by opposing gay rights. If people are supporting the repression of other people because of their own inability to face their own issues, then I say the needs of the many outweigh the needs of the hypocrite.

Get their friends to secretly tape their phone conversations, and see if you can get hold of some clothing with cum stains to put on TV. We need to take the Congress back from a bunch of vicious thugs, and they're the ones who set the rules for this fight.

On edit: Hey, better yet, see if you can get them to lie to a federal investigator about being gay, and then have them impeached for lying.
