Is TV Coverage Of The GOP Conv As Equally Hostile As With The Dems?
Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 07:17 AM by arwalden
Are they all getting hard-hitting Democratic panelists to offer moment-by-moment counterpoint arguments to the speeches? Are they only serving up "no-name" lesser-known milquetoast timid Republicans for the rebuttals?

Are they just as tight and stingy with the actual air-time that's devoted to the GOP convention as they were with the Democratic convention?

It's a simple query: Are they playing fair and being equally tough and biased AGAINST the Republicans DURING their convention as they were against the Democrats during our convention?

1. Not last night.....
it was pretty much all repubs analyzing the events and speeches of the night...meanwhile, at the dem convention is was the other way around.....really sad....I believe Media Matters is keeping a close eye on the coverage.

2. Hahahaha!
Oh, you weren't joking?

Not a Democrat in sight, and I was flipping through all the channels. Nothing but happy, cheerleading Rethug guests. Nothing but wet kisses for the hatefest speeches.

It was, as they say, to laugh...

3. I watched C-Span...
...during the DNC because I didn't care to watch the constant Kerry-Dem bashing from the Repuke talking heads that EVERY media station had on. There were NO Dem commentators during the DNC, only Repig ones. That's all I saw. That's all I heard.

After about 30 minutes I would turn to C-span and enjoy the convention without all the bu$hit from the Republican-owned media.

OF COURSE they are not providing the same cut-off, disinterested programming of the RNC as they did the DNC. The Republicans own the media. Who'dya think they'll spend the most time broadcasting and supporting?

Hint: It's not the Dems. I never, ever expected they would provide equal coverage of anything Dem-related. They never do.

Drop the expectation that they will, then you won't be disappointed. The media has NO reason to be 'fair' in their assessment. The Fairness Doctrine is dead.

4. On World News Tonight
last night, Peter did this bit about how conventions are "carefully scripted" events. Then comes the "however" and he proceeds to describe something "spontaneous" with states pledging their delegates.

The piece that followed had absolutely NO spontaneous event. EVERY person they focused on was READING from a prepared SCRIPT. Not one could even make EYE CONTACT.

I played it twice because I thought I must have missed it. It didn't exist. The conclusion: Democrats are tightly scripted, Republicans are loose and spontaneous -- natural if you will.

Right, Pete. That fits with my experience.

9. So I should...
Stop watching tv, buying newspapers or magazines. Because they have ads, and I just automatically buy whatever is in those ads without thinking, right?

Not.

13. No
The way to stop it is to stop the massive accumulation of media outlets by a handful, a handful, of corporations, corporations that are owned by Republicans. If you think Americans are going to give up teevee or something, you will be very, very, disappointed.

14. Are you kidding?
SOmetimes I wonder where some of the DU posters have been living for the last three years.

The media is comfortably in W's pocket, and happy to be there. Anyone who expected to see numbers of democrats trotted out to criticise the Repugs during their convention has to be a total naif.

"tens of thousands" protest?

I helped run a march in NYC and it takes a lot more than "tens of thousands" of participants to fill up a march as long as that one. Half a million is closer to the mark, based on my own personal real-world experience.

Been there, done that, the media is lying. The only democrat you're going to see on cable is Zell Miller.

16. 27-6 by my count on CNN and MSRNC from 7pm-1am. What actions
will McAuliffe and John Kerry direct the DNC and Kerry Campaign staff to take to help rectify this situation?
