In his interview with Jon Stewart Kerry called *'s "decisiveness" "stubbornness". Similarly *'s "bold" characteristic is in reality recklessness. This is what will make or break the Kerry campaign IMO. It is past time to attack *'s strengths, or at very least expose them for what they are.
Last night I spoke with a relative who isn't really interested in politics. When I asked her about the campaign she said she hates what * has done to the environment, she was emphatic in her disgust with * on this issue. She genuinely believes Kerry would be better on that most important issue to her. She thinks the budget deficit as well as the tax cuts are a crime, but wonders how Kerry will pay for his promises there also (she couldn't understand why he offers a tax cut to anyone). She knew the Swift Boat lies were just that. There wasn't a single issue that she was strong about Bush on, so I asked her who she intended to vote for and she said she didn't know!
She said Bush is strong and Kerry might be wishy-washy on dealings with the terrorists. I argued that strong in this case means stupidly stubborn but she was unconvinced (I'm too partisan to have a valuable opinion in her mind).
I pushed her as to whom she would vote for if the election were today and she said that she'd close her eyes and point. She lives in Ohio so she has been bombarded with ads, and the messages have mostly reached her, but not the truth.
The Kerry campaign just has to define * and to do that they'll have to take the gloves off.
