Are Obama's finances really that bad?
I'm sure everyone's seen at least one panicky media report about how "Obama's doomed!!!" for doing things like not taking public financing, etc. But from what you know, are things really that bad?

3. I distinctly remember a NYT article that said he was facing "problems" for not taking public
financing.

10. It's possible -- we just never know if these stories are accurate until
we see the proof either way. That was basically my question, which I didn't state clearly at all -- was this a general sense of how the campaign is doing, or was there some new definitive info...

4. I doubt it is that bad but he is running a massive campaign that
will need all the financial support that it can get heading into the home stretch. If this report gets people more fired up or more willing to donate that's not a bad thing.

6. They spend money like drunken sailors
Edited on Tue Sep-09-08 07:41 PM by Gman
never before has a Democratic campaign had so much money. I suspect there's a millions and millions of absolutely fluff, vouchered expenses by staffers. Staffers are the lowest of the low. They should work for their meals and transportation plus a little stipend. The payoff is the big job in DC when the candidate wins. Then they make the big money. I think some in this campaign want it both ways.

p.s. staffers lowest of the low? I've been there done that... all of it. Only our candidate lost.

13. You tell me
http://query.nictusa.com/pres/2008/M8/

Obama
Started 71 million
Rec'd 51 million
spent 57 million
Ended 66 million, 1 million debt

McCain
Started 27 million
Rec'd 27 million
spent 32 million
Ended 21 million, 2 million debt

a side question from someone who knows more about elections financing. I notice that Kucinich received federal funds (that pretty well knocked out his debt), as did edwards(which gave him an ending positive balance). Whats the deal on that, and what can the Edwards campaign do with that surplus?
