McCain: After 9/11 we were one America - BINGO
Can't escape the convention if I just want to hear the news
Thus, on CNN there was a talk about McCain's speech about being "One America" after9/111.

Yes, and we've seen how Bush wasted our unity, how he wasted the support of the whole world, how he turned an uplifting moment into cheap and selfish ones.

I hope that the Kerry's campaign can take these words and carry them forward.

1. Just because we one America doesn't mean we are one mind or one party.
The idea that "unity" means getting behind the republican agenda is ridiculous.

5. The idea is that right after 9/11 the nation was unified
but now it is divided to its core. Why? What happened that caused the country to go in just three short years from grim solidarity to cataclysmic, polar opposition? The answer is - Bush. Bush and the republicans have used the 9/11 attack for small, political ends, they have abused the nation's trust and squandered any unity we may have had for personal profit. Bush and the republicans should be made to pay for this...

7. I know. But we can still use McCain's image and comments
with our interpretation. This is what politics' about.

4. he betrayed us
well, not me, I never trusted him.

But many people did, here in the U.S. and all over the world. They trusted him and put aside their differences.

Bush didn't have any part in bringing that about, that was just the natural goodwill among ordinary citizens and some leaders. Bush just happened to be the beneficiary of it.

And what did he do with it, he just wrung every bit of benefit for himself and his friends as he could manage.

6. The very best case against GWB...
It was clear he was an inadequate president as soon as he cancelled the "gag rule" family planning contribs and messed with FOIA regs. But we all saw an amazing, unprecedented opportunity blown to hell- a cosmic slap in the face that has redefined our country in ways that may be irreversable.

There was an image of America, and us, as Americans- in part being of a young country- naive, trusting, optimistic, can-do, determined. (there's a less flattering inverse of each of those attributes, but still)

After 911, I suspended suspicion and trusted. What a chance we had to shine- to atone, to enter a new era of caring. I saw Studs Terkel some time later saying how Bush could stand on the floor of the UN and announce America's new plan to end hunger- offer what we would do and appeal for help. What a thrilling thought. The US, having recognized and finally appreciated the international *affection* that was still, graciously, ours for the taking- leading in the most basic, survival level endeavor because we ourselves had ever-so-briefly, just seen the face of desperation.

And then betrayal. It is Bush's failure that I take most personally.
