Sent this out to my South Baldwin Democrats this morning. What a fantastic day.
Met in Pensacola at 10:00 yesterday. Think we had about 30 cars and 60-70 people. Wish I'd taken a head count. Enjoyed meeting the Klingers from Lillian, two of our newer SBD members.
Jerry Holt, chairman of (FL) Panhandle for Kerry, was our leader. My hat's off to him and his folks for what they've done in the heart of a repub stronghold.
Wish I could remember more names, but...he and his group, and some nice ladies from Mobile, provided more signs, stickers, and (something new to me) CAR PAINT! to decorate all our vehicles. Car Paint comes in a big magic marker thingy that you can write on car windows with, won't wash off in rain (more about that later), but comes off with a soapy rag.
More about it here, for future reference:
http://www.kuzsports.com/carpaints.htmI'm told you can get it at any auto parts store.
We pulled out in Kerry-Van from University Mall and took Highway 90 out of town towards Baldwin County (AL). Managed to pretty much stay in convoy despite driving through one of the worst thunderstorms I've ever seen. We re-grouped in Robertsdale, did some more car decorating, and proceeded through Silverhill to Fairhope and the park and pier on Mobile Bay. Some of the Eastern Shore Democrats joined us there, and I think we had around 100 present. Under the pavilion we enjoyed a couple of pep talks, one from (I think) the chair of the Mobile Democrats, and one from one of the Pensacola crowd. A lady from the Eastern Shore Democrats also welcomed us. Bag lunches were kindly provided for all by the Mobile Democrats.
From Fairhope we pressed on to Mobile and Bishop State College. Enjoyed more rain on the way and at our arrival. Also enjoyed two more inspirational speeches, one from a gentleman working to get ex-felons registered to vote.
From BSC, the plan was to wend our way through Prichard, to Springhill Ave., to University Blvd., and back in on Airport Blvd. to the Mobile Democratic HQ near BelAir Mall for speeches, a rally, and cookout. That was the plan. Some how we got split up leaving BSC and our Kerry-Van came apart. We did have excellent written directions (a must for this kind of operation) and Helen and I managed to find our way back to the route, so we became a Kerry-Van of one. What we didn't manage to do was find BelAir Mall (I know, I know...) and by the time we realized we'd missed it, it was time to get home to give our cat his evening insulin shot. C'est la vie.
We were terribly disappointed we missed the final rally and cookout, and Helen Bains' speech. I know it was a stemwinder.
Sorry about not having more names of the organizers, speakers, and participants. I promise to take a pen and pad next time.
All-in-all we had a terrific day with some wonderful like-minded folks. It was a real tonic for me.
