Back in February, Michelle Obama, wife of Democratic presidential nominee Sen. Barack Obama, caught a lot of heat for an off-the-cuff comment at a rally in Milwaukee.
Remember that? Here's what she said:
"People in this country are ready for change and hungry for a different kind of politics and ... for the first time in my adult life I am proud of my country because it feels like hope is finally making a comeback"
Conservative media teed off on her, trying to paint her as unpatriotic and un-American. Michelle Obama, they argued, hated America!
If that's the case, meet Todd Palin, who must really, really hate his country. If, in fact, this is his country.
Mr. Palin: Ashamed of his country for eight years
That's the only logical conclusion one can draw from Old Man Palin's membership in the Alaskan Independence Party — a group that advocates secession from the United States — from 1994 to 2002.
Media bias? Think again. The party's own Web site links to videos of party officials speaking at a "seperatist (sic) convention." The site also includes this quote from the party's founder Joe Vogler:
"I'm an Alaskan, not an American. I've got no use for America or her damned institutions."
It's going to be pretty hard to spin that one away.
Stand by your man
Palin herself spoke at the group's last convention, but that was only in the capacity of the governor welcoming a large group to town, or so says the McCain campaign.
"I share your party's vision of upholding the constitution of our great state," she says during the video, later adding "Keep up the good work."
But Todd Palin was a member of a party that hated being in the U.S.A. so much, it wanted to leave. If he had his way, then, his wife would be vice president of the United States, but he'd be a citizen of another country. If he lived in the veep's house, would he be an illegal immigrant?
If Obama has to suffer the grief from an off-hand remark from an excited wife — who didn't suggest secession or any Civil War-like moves — then Palin should answer questions about her America-hating husband.
She won't. The McCain campaign has her locked down. She just goes rally to rally, repeating the same story about listing a plane on eBay (it didn't sell), hating the "bridge to nowhere (she supported it until it got too hot) and supporting family values (while charging the state for dragging her family around with her on the job.).
