Doonesbury idea-BD needs to react to the purple heart bandaids

I hope that the Doonesbury strip does something with the purple heart bandaid insult. It could be fun to see BD react to these bandaids. It may be too late for this concept to be incorporated in this week's strips on the GOP convention but it is an idea that I hope is used later.

2. do you remember how BD got his first purple heart?

I remember it from an old, old Doonesbury book. BD got separated from his unit in the jungle and befriended a Vietnamese man. They found a case of Shiltz and BD cut himself on a pop top.

That's a medal * should have been awarded.

4. Strikes a cord with me.

One of my uncles, who was a WWII Marine in the South Pacific, came home with a Purple Heart. One day I asked him about it and he said he got it opening a beer for his CO. He had no desire to talk about his medals or his experiences - so we left it at that. I was probably about 13 at the time.

My uncle was in his early 20's and also suffered from PTSD, which was not acknowledged at the time. He's dead now - and saw little happiness in his life. He was one of a half-dozen of my uncles who served in WWII. We were so lucky they all came home - we were not always aware of the continuing price they paid.

Sorry for the rambling...it's just the sadness of seeing those stinking bandaids.

3. He may yet

I'm not sure how many strips ahead Trudeau sends off to the syndicate, but I think we can pretty much expect a reaction to this stuff sometime in the future. It's just the kind of thing we've come to expect in his strips.

5. Email all the political cartoonists

this is the kind of thing that needs to be brought into the mainstream. Middle America needs to be made aware that this is how the GOP think.
