Obama's hilarious riff on being a centerfold ... in Popular Mechanics!
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 01:15 AM by choie
Our guy is funny! From tonight's Letterman show, when Dave asked Obama whether Palin had derailed the conversation about issues, Obama conceded* that sure, she's a phenomenon, and then added a cute self-deprecating bit about the transience of fame:

OBAMA: "I mean, y'know, as somebody who used to be on the cover of Time and Newsweek, you know...”

(audience, Dave laugh)

LETTERMAN (laughs): “Those were the days.” (audience applauds)

OBAMA: “Those were the days. I had a recent offer with Popular Mechanics.” (audience laughs)

LETTERMAN: “Take it, take it.” (audience laughs)

OBAMA: “...Said they had a centerfold, yeah, with a wrench, you know...” (audience, Obama laugh)

 LOVE IT! The audience and Dave seemed to eat it up with a spoon, as well they should. Charming, humble, confident ... the man's a winner.

* And that's the absolute last time those two words are gonna be put together, y'all!

1. That kind of goes with what Michael Moore was talking about on LKL
the other evening.

He had said, when you are under your car working, and the wrench that you are using isn't working, you don't keep on using it. You use a different wrench instead. Talking about McBush vs. Obama.

5. Uh, it's the substance *tupid.
I am growing weary of the pandering and stagecraft. I have a sneaking suspicion that I am not alone in my feelings....and if I am that's okay too.

10. Yea, just like the bizzaro code rolls...
When the political discourse dissolves to the point that the person I am discussing the affairs of the day resorts to "talking" to an avatar/icon...the discussion is over for me.

11. Sad/cry. Your humor thingy is broken.
There are thousands of posts with substantiative subject matter...this is a "celebrate the humor of the candidate thread." Shrug.

6. Better chance
than old man who put their country last by putting a cute rookie at his side to attract gawkers.

8. Being likeable and funny, among other things? These days: hell yes!
Edited on Thu Sep-11-08 01:31 AM by choie
I mean, where you been for the past eight years, on Mars? :)

Obama has tons of other excellent qualities, all of which are far more important for our country, but the one that just might convince people he's their man is whether he's good natured, relaxed and a 'regular guy'. I mean, DUH. We were denied Gore and Kerry presidencies in part because of this dumbass qualification, despite the fact that they're overwhelmingly superior to W in every way, shape and form. (Including being more likeable in reality!) But the media and righties were able to portray them falsely as stiff elitists, and that sure as hell didn't help.

So the more Obama can charm people and show his terrific personality, the better chances he'll have to win them over and show them what a phenomenal president he'll be where it counts: on the issues.
