Morton "Purple-heart band-aid" Blackwell/Co-founder of the Moral Majority
The SOB who had these things made and circulated them is a co-founder of the Moral Majority. He also was a White House special assistant to President Reagan for public liaison.

He's the head of the Conservative Leadership PAC and the Leadership Institute. Blackwell's name and organizations are all over Google, and are neck-deep in the most extreme right wing initiatives around.

I'd keep googling his name, but I'm at the office right now. This information has to get out there -- that a big-league, extreme-right-wing fish showed utter, callous disrespect for all wounded and disabled veterans.

"With Paul M. Weyrich and Richard Viguerie, Blackwell met with Jerry Falwell to found the Moral Majority. 'Finally, on the verge of realizing his right-wing utopia, Weyrich harvested what his friend Morton Blackwell termed the greatest track of virgin timber on the political landscape: evangelicals. Out there is what you might call a moral majority, he told Jerry Falwell in Lynchburg, Pennsylvania, in 1979. That's it, Falwell exclaimed. That's the name of the organization.

Spread this far and wide, DUers. Great research, rezmutt!!!

Oh, and don't forget the rather important fact that Morton Blackwell has never worn the uniform in his entire life.

5. What concerns me about this.....
Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 05:12 PM by loudsue
We all know the republicans are FAMOUS for cleaning up their messes by saying "it was just one bad apple".

I am concerned that if we focus on Morton Blackwell, HE, and NOT THE WHOLE REPUBLICAN PARTY, will be singled out to be the bad guy....just the one bad apple.

He is NOT the bad guy....the whole convention full of these slime balls are the bad guys. Don't let one guy be singled out to make the rest of them look innocent. THEY AREN'T!!! They're all guilty as hell...all of them.

Ya know what I mean??

Blackwell might have come up with some band aids and some art work, but the WHOLE CONVENTION jumped on the idea like a chicken on a June bug.

6. What you say is true, loudsue, but Blackwell's so big, he's more than...
just one bad apple. His history and associations make him emblematic of cratefuls of bad apples.

Blackwell is the very kind of extreme right-wing Republican that the GOP is trying to *hide* this week, with their phony big-tent, pseudo-moderate presentation for the sheeple.

7. Do you think the bandage stunt was intentional PR for Blackwell's
'Institute', fully anticipating the damage he was going to do to his party and candidate?

It's certainly getting him lots of attention, and some of that convention may translate into extra donations. Blackwell's salary fell $12,000 from 2002 to 2003. He "only" made $176,000 from the 'Leadership Institute' that year. He's used to big INCREASES--he only made $113,000 in 2000.

This guy may be old, but he still has the mentality of a frat-boy College Republican. Doesn't the bandage stunt seem childishly cruel and stupid? 'Mr Blackwell' has been 'educating' College Republicans in 'public policy' for forty-some years, and apparently never has had to grow up.

Leadership Institute finances are summarized at http://www.guidestar.org/controller/searchResults.gs?action_gsReport=1&npoId=140211 .

Institute tax returns showing his salary, activities, and business relationships with other far right outfits are at http://documents.guidestar.org/2003/510/235/2003-510235174-1-9.pdf and other URLs exactly the same except for the year.

9. I thought this too, AirAmFan...
$$$$ is $$$$, and the RW cannot have enough -- even if it means trashing vets to bring some in.

Good use of GuideStar -- excellent resource.

10. IMO, "follow the money" still is the best guide to understanding these
greedy, mean-spirited sociopaths, even three decades after Watergate.
