our untapped base in Ohio is...
I can't speak for other college towns but in Cincinnati there are at least two groups that I firmly believe are going to come out in droves. That is African Americans and the secular youth you find near Universities.

They remember Clinton and they know things were better.

I am having huge success. I'm not working off a list. I'm just working the street. I do downtown and all around the campus. UC is quite urban so I'm working both demographics at the same time. They are registered and they are for Kerry. Do we Have enough of them? That I don't know. That's why I'm out there. I do know they are all telling me they are definitely voting this time. I do it even when I'm running errands because I live near campus.

6. I got 4 new registrations...
Just waiting for my carryout from Krishna on Calhoun. I just got 3 newly minted 18 year olds on Short Vine when I dropped my DVDs off at the library.

7. Rosebud, would you share some of the main
points of your technique? What you're doing is great, frankly.

Any suggestions?

5. Do whatever you can to knock the edge off the rest of
the huge RW ghetto that is the rest of Hamilton County. I know we can't take the county but with the help of Cleveland, Toledo and other Dem cities, we can win Ohio. Thanks for the help.

8. I think we can take Hamilton County
Cincinnati is 43% black and densely populated. Our base has more room to grow. They're tapped if they are chasing Amish.

9. It's hard to believe that they say Ohio is so close
In fact I just got off the phone w/ a friend I haven't talked to in a while and he asked me what I think of this race. Of course I told him and he said he agreed. He also said that everyone where he works (NASA) is saying Kerry also.
I have seen very few bush stickers and a lot of Kerry ones. Almost everyone I personally know is going with Kerry.
I am just wondering where they are getting their numbers. I am in Cleveland BTW.

11. Cleveland
Cleveland is a pretty Democratic city, so that doesn't suprise me.

I am seeing a lot of both here in Columbus.

10. I live in Price Hill...
and there are a few Kerry signs...not as many as * signs, but I feel good about Cincinnati going Kerry. I have converted about 30 rethugs into "I am not voting" or "voting for Kerry".

12. My technique is...
I walk up to people on the street (downtown and near campus) and show them my registration forms and ask them if they know anybody that needs any, like any 18 year olds. Most people I talk to are already registered. I then use humor to find out who they are voting for and to motivate them by communicating that it is a team effort. I say things like "Are you with us on Nov. 2 to send that man back to Texas" or just say "he's gotta go." I get a lot of affirmatives, smiles and chuckles. Because I profile who I talk to I'm getting 98% Kerry voters. I only get blown off by skatebaorders. I also specialize in turning on the just barely 18 set. I got 3 new 18 year olds and talked to about 15 Kerry voters in about 20 minutes near UC today and I probably talked to about 25 people downtown today on my lunchbreak. I also educate just how close Ohio is and that we could decide the presidency.

14. music to my ears, oh rosebud ... in battleground states, am convinced
like you that we can make big gains on "net turnout" just by focusing on where our dem ground is fertile for newly registered Kerry voters, and/or to help the disenchanted stay home at least ...

http://www.nytimes.com/packages/html/politics/2004_ELECTIONGUIDE_GRAPHIC/index_SWINGSTATESOR.html
this is a great site from the NYT for people who want to help in battleground states ... you select a battleground state upon entering the site (it defaults to Oregon), and you can see at a quick and uncomplicated glance where you can increase the dem vote or abate the repug vote ...

after you look at Ohio, PM me with your thoughts ... thanks ...

15. Reminds me of a Michael Moore comment
In a speech last month at the time of the DNC Convention, he told about a precinct in Cleveland that is 95% black. The voter turnout in that precinct? A whopping 16%.

As Moore himself said, you can't get any more base than that!

all over this country and talking to the citizens.

all of us know here that if were going to gauge whether we win or lose by what the media reports, then of course were going to lose. thats what most of them (media types) want

but we know better.... those who are working hard to talk to people about the issues and get people to the polls are going to make the difference.

thank you so very much rosebud
