The newspaper I work for failed to mention TWO issues from yesterday
Edited on Tue Aug-31-04 07:36 PM by bigwillq
This was in GD but I moved it here. I think this is where it belongs.

IMO

1. How Shrub said "We can't win war on terror"
2. The Band-Aid issue.

We have a staff reporter down in NYC and in his story he failed to mention the band aid.
He also wrote nothing about Shrub's miscue.

They couldn't even run an AP story on that statement.
I feel the band-aid issue has to be one of the dirtiest tactics used in politics ever.

I am really pissed off. I blasted the news department.
They said, they didn't have control over what our staff writer wrote.

I always thought our paper was left-wing.
They usually always endorse the DEM candidates.

Am I wrong to be this pissed? Thanks for letting me rant.
I am kind of sick about reading some of these posts about the RNC and how some feel Kerry is losing his steam, which I think isn't true, so my above statements kind of feel like I'm doing the same thing. I hope I'm not.

A blank page is just the beginning of a new chapter

2. Thanks for blasting them....
Hopefully they'll shape up. Can you contact the reporter in NYC?

3. That's actually a good idea
To contact the reporter.
Maybe I will send him an e-mail and let him know what I think.

4. Self-kick
I'm such a dork.

I had originally posted this in GD and then self-moved it here into GD:2004 b/c when I tried to edit it, it said the edit period had expired.

So please feel free to continue the discussion from GD in this thread.
Thanks.

5. Two more stories that are being largely ignored by the media
* the former Texas speaker of the house named Barnes who apologized for getting George Bush into the champagne unit of the Texas Air National Guard

* the guy Franklin from the Defense Department who is accused of spying for Israel and the mysterious "outing" of the story by someone in the Bush administration, probably because the FBI had succeeded in turning him and getting his cooperation in order to nail the higher ups. I suspect the outing was by Rove, as a heads up to any other department potentially involved, so they could start warming up their shredders.

9. It's a real shame how badly Americans like to ignore the truth
These are hard news stories that need to be told.
I thought that was the job of a newspaper or any media outlet. To tell the reader the truth about a certain issue.

At least that's how I go about my job. I'm only a sports writer but it's still the same thing.

6. They said, they didn't have control over what our staff writer wrote.
That's bullshit.
I'm a newspaper editor. I have on many occasions told a reporter and go back and do it right.

7. We have real early deadlines
And I guess he didn't send until late and they couldn't get another story in for makeover.

But they did tell me they had no control over what he wrote.

And yes, some times I have heard our editors tell writers to write it over.

8. It takes about two minutes
To copy the relevant info from an AP or other wire story and paste it into the staff writer's story. I've done that more than once also.

10. I know.
I'm really surprised that didn't even use an AP story as a side bar to what the staff writer wrote about the convention.

Instead they ran an AP story about who on the repuke side will run in 2008.

11. It was probably laziness
They had already laid out the page with the 2008 story and changing it to something new required more work.

14. You and I
Probably know more than most folks that what many see as a sinister media conspiracy is often just sloth and sloppiness.

15. That's a very true statement
So far, I have never let sloth and/or sloppiness get in the way of telling a story.

But I've only had this job for 2 years and I still consider myself a rookie. So I kind of go the extra mile.
