CNN turns down Log Cabin Republicans ad
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 08:01 AM by RatTerrier
I think this ad will help Dems more than Republicans. Let's hope it eventually gets aired.

Gay GOP group criticizes CNN's rejection of ad

By Mark Memmott, USA TODAY

NEW YORK — The largest organization of homosexual Republicans is objecting to CNN's decision not to air a TV ad that calls for "tolerance" from the GOP on gay issues.
CNN said Tuesday that it would run the ad if the group that produced it, the Log Cabin Republicans, removes one photo. That image, on screen for about two seconds at the end of the ad, shows Fred Phelps, an anti-homosexual Baptist minister, holding two signs that say "God Hates Fags" as he protested outside the funeral of Matthew Shepard. Shepard, a 21-year-old gay college student, was brutally murdered in Wyoming in October 1998.

The dispute highlights how political speech sometimes collides with commercial interests and standards.

Matthew Furman, a CNN spokesman, said the news network determined "that image is just inappropriate." He said CNN may have aired video of Phelps holding the signs during its reporting on the Shepard funeral, but as part of a commercial the network felt it was too offensive.

The Log Cabin Republicans said they would not alter the ad to comply with CNN's objections. Christopher Barron, the group's political director, said "that image is the whole point of the ad. There's no ad without it. It would be like televising the Super Bowl without showing the fourth quarter."

6. Don't know whether "fecetious" was a typo or not, but it is an excellent
new word. I intend to use it.

2. it's not ok for an ad to use cnn's own news footage??
it's proper news when cnn shows the video, but offensive when used as part of an ad?

the amount of hypocritical illogic used by the anti-gay crowd is absolutely staggering. the bigotry is so transparent.

9. Offensive? Someone holding a sign like that outside a funeral

is offensive. Time to go send CNN some more email.
