3. if true, ford's been assigned the role of appeaser to gay people...
...and socially liberal republicans. It doesn't mean a thing in the context of real republican politics...if true, that is.

5. Ford always was moderate as minority leader
I think personally the GOP social liberal and gays are in the wrong party, yeah they dont wanna have to pay higher taxes boo friggity hoo, would they rather have a president who respects who they are than a president whose base is religious fanatics who believe in evanglical christianity domination of America.

6. I cheered when former President Ford came out in favor of gay rights.
John, I'm very pessimistic about the Republican Party and its attitudes and policies towards gay people. As a gay man myself, I sneer and laugh at the Log Cabin Republicans and think they're a bunch of fools for wanting to even try. But there are people in the Republican Party who want to reach out to the gay community. The RUC is an example of that. I've heard of them...it's a group that includes former Wyoming Senator Alan Simpson and others (I believe Mary Cheney was a part of it at one time. I don't know if she still is)

There are people who are trying. I can only wish them my best. But there's going to have to be a wholesale purge of the fundementalists who currently effectively control the Republican Party. And they are not going to cede their control easily.

9. She is, thats how I found out about it
Alan Simpson? wow, and he's from the state Matt Sheppard was murdered in, speaking of that have you read Kerry's remarks on that murder from the 90's, it was powerful. It seems to me that its not really a battle of youth and age because Ford is 91, younger htan my nana slightly but there are young republicans opposed to gay rights, I think my brother may have a point when he said he doesnt feel they really oppose gay rights, they just use it to excite their base.

7. Gerald Ford is irrelevant to todays politics. He is a historical figure
The GOP is 48% to 49% born-again/fundy.....so any type of pro-gay move withing the party is DOA.

8. Gerald Ford was the last
Moderate GOP President we had. He in fact had expressed concerns about his party turning too far to the right. He thought it was a big mistake. I have always though he was a decent guy.

12. I liked Gerry too
In fact, the 1976 Republican Convention was the last one I could watch all the way through without my stomach twisting into knots.
