DELEGATES KEEPING FISTS TIGHT (the rich follow a no tipping policy)

By GERSH KUNTZMAN
September 1, 2004 -- Hey, delegates, open your wallets!
That's the unvarnished advice from tip-starved concierges in hotels where GOP delegates and their families are staying.

They say Republicans are the certainly the party of fiscal restraint — at least with their own money.

"I wouldn't call them bad tippers — I'd call them non-tippers!" said Thomas Potesak, a concierge at the Sheraton Manhattan, where the Alaska, Iowa, South Dakota and Virgin Islands delegates are bunking.

1. If their money weren't the most important thing in the world to them...
they wouldn't be Republicans.

13. It's a case of
"mine mine mine!" Some people derive more security/happiness through possessions and "wealth," while other, more progressive, people derive more security/happiness through knowing that other individuals' needs are met, and helping out.

19. GOPer holds lollipop up to a dancer's breast and sucks on it - tip?
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 11:28 AM by papau
DUer Karmadillo posted that ABC News reported that : "A John "convinces" prostitute to accept $50 for sex"

And in the Village voice we find that GOP types try to avoid fee for service: http://www.villagevoice.com/blogs/stripclub /

Lap-dancing for equal opportunity

Aside from the guy who held a lollipop up to a dancer's breast and sucked on it, the Republicans were generally well-behaved tonight.

They are in a 'big city' and they just don't get it.

People have to make a living on those tips.

6. Shades of Mr. Pink!
How come the ones with the most money are the stingiest? Assholes. Having worked most of my life in the food service industry, I SPIT on these fuckers. TIPPING IS HOW WE ARE ABLE TO AFFORD THE GOODS THE "PRODUCER CLASS" PRODUCES, YOU EVIL TOEFUCKERS! Without our buying power, your empire crumbles.

7. I know of at least one waiter who must have gotten a good tip
Yesterday I saw this waiter at an expensive midtown restaurant escorting a delegate to her taxi. She was saying how New York was so much nicer than she thought it would be since "nobody respects Bush up here - did you see that 5,000 (ha) people protested the other day?"

This guy responded that the demonstrators were "too stoned to know what they were talking about." :puke: Thankfully the crosswalk light changed before I heard the rest.

9. I used to work at an Air Force Commissary for tips only.
I bagged groveries. :-)

Anyway, the worst tippers? General's wives. Followed closely by Colonel's wives. The best tippers were the wives of enlisted folks.

Generally speaking, of course. ;-)

11. I work in a grocery store
in a rich town. The people who are the biggest pains in the ass are the richest ones. They will hold up my line for half an hour arguing about a two cent difference in price. They're the same people who hire illegal immigrants to watch their kids, clean their pools and trim their hedges. No wonder they're rich - they squeeze every penny until it yelps for mercy.

I don't know the politics of all of them but I know for sure that a good number of them are * supporters. I suppose they don't want too much to trickle down and spoil us on the bottom.

12. I was amazed...
...while I was in Europe, I found that the folks in the service industry there look at tipping as something that identifies "the ugly American"...FYI, when in Europe, don't tip or you will be looked at as arogant...la

14. Waiters & waitresses are paid sufficiently in Europe.
In the USA, salaries are set low & tipping is required. The European system is more civilized, but has not been adapted by most US employers.

16. And European servers are looked upon as professionals.
Here, they're looked upon as slaves.

I think EVERYONE IN AMERICA should work in a restaurant and as a secretary/assistant ... it will change your perspective for the rest of your life -- and teach you to treat those who help you every day so much better. I became a much better tipper than my parents after working in a restaurant!

Tip less (like 5%-10%), but by all means tip. Not tipping is considered bad style, almost as much as it is stateside.
Of course regional differences do apply.

15. I'm thinking about making trips to both Boston and New York ...
... and letting their chambers of commerce know I'm coming in order to:

1) In my small way, repay Boston businesses for losing money so that the DNC could have its kick-ass convention there.

2) In my small way, repay those in New York who lost tips and business to these cheap-ass hicks from the hinterlands.

20. Working class have always been the best tippers.
My mom who was the vice president of her chapter of the CWA would tip people in the friggin' drive through window. They would sit there dumbstruck, not sure if they should take the tip not.

21. Check out the NY Times this AM...
Hastert and Pataki pretending to be bartenders....notice that the pints they're pulling for honest customers are all foam...

http://graphics7.nytimes.com/images/2004/09/01/nyregion/01pink,0.jpg

If that isn't a perfect metaphor for the GOP...even play-acting they can't resist a rip-off...

He went on about how New York was "greedy." Typical Republican he is, he now expects that same city to pander to him...put him up in a hotel, restaurants, shows.

22. Tight wad bastards.
I always leave tips for house keepers in hotel and in return I've gotten extra towels and soaps and stuff.

When I was in NYC, the house keepers were wonderful. They left bottles of water (w/o charge) and all kinds of cool bathroom goodies. All because I took the time and left a tip.

Same with waiters and waitresses, I know what it's like to bust my ass for tips. I always tip well.

25. It's been my experience that "rich equals cheap"
My brother in law is worth at least $15 million. If you go out to dinner with him, expect to pay; he never brings his wallet so someone else will have to pick up the check. Needless to say, I don't eat with the guy.

I knew a woman who lives in a very wealthy IL town. She lives in a "golf course" community within sight of the 18th hole. She will not pay for plants for her water garden -- she will trespass on other people's property and dig up water lilies for take with her -- without anyone's permission. If she needs dirt for her gardens, she will find a farm where she won't be seen and steal dirt, leaving a big hole behind. She thinks it's all quite funny.
