There's always a lot of rationalizing when your guy is behind. "Hey guys, just ignore the polls, they're made up!"

Then the second we pull ahead "Yea! We're winning!"

22. It's how people cope.
I knew the polls were probably right and McCain was winning, but I expected it. Even said the day after his speech, when Obama was still up, he'd probably take the lead for a week. I also said no one should freak out until it proves to be sustained and it wasn't. Likewise, we shouldn't start dancing on McCain's grave just yet...if Obama is leading 50-44 or 51-43 by this time next week, then it'll show his current bump is a trend and that's when we can start getting excited. But it wouldn't surprise me if McCain gains a bit and this race is tied again by mid-week.

That just seems to be the nature of this race. However, I think the days of McCain leading by a significant margin, basically anything 3 or above, is over.

27. Sadly, at times, no.
They shout you down if you're not freaking out like they are.

It seems 90% of GDP is of two groups: those who are completely optimistic and believe Obama will walk to victory, with over 500 electoral votes. And those who are totally pessimistic, believing Obama needs to be up +14 in the polls to even break even against McCain, because the Repubs will steal it or the Bradley Effect will be implemented.

48. well you forgot the tiresome conspiracy theories as well

There is a reasonable discussion about underpolling in an unconventional GE where there are huge numbers of new registrations especially in a few key states. It is a dilemma to the pollsters as to how much weight they should give them until they actually vote.

66. Agreed.
I still think daily tracking polls are bullshit, though--barring our guy suddenly getting a consistent 10-15 point lead, I don't think they're indicative of anything significant. In the end, all that matters are state-by-state polls.

Like Obama said, which is it - Obama's too inexperienced to lead, or he's responsible for everything going on right now.

board sounded when Obama was down. I still don't trust the polls. Doesn't matter if Obama is up or not. I think this election is like no other election in history. We will see what happens Nov 4th period. I think Obama will win. However I'm not going to get sad when the polls shift and say he's down and I'm not going to get happy when they say he's up. I just think no one really knows and we go by "what's in the air" and what's in the air is an Obama win in my opinion.

There is no mass conspiracy...The polls are what they are... If they are wrong it is most likely because of poor polling techniques and not manipulation or malice...I'm glad some people here can see a mirror image of themselves, or as John Adams said:

41. Our posts do sound somewhat the same when the polls for
Obama are down, but there is a big difference. These guys sound confused, like they are ready to jump ship, like - to hell with our quarterback, he's not coming through for us. Whereas the DU posts, do reflect some desperation, but only because we all know how important it is for Obama to win. Plus our posts also reflect faith in Obama even when the polls are down for him. Still it was a laugh to read them. Thanks for the post.

34. These people kill me
The state by state polls do not show this trend. Polls can be rigged and they usually are. People should just forget about the damn polls and concentrate on the other indicators that bozObama is losing. The melt down of the BozObama campaign for one, the ever louder shrieking of the MSM, these are all tale tell signs that the chosen one is losing. 3 top democrats publicly changed their vote to McCain/Palin this week. The PUMA's are madder than ever at bozObama and are switching in droves and you think these polls are accurate? BozObama has lost much of the woman vote and he can't win without it.

His desperate ploy yesterday of having 20 young blacks pretend to be protesting him shows how scared he is, and I firmly believe it was a setup and not a real protest. If it was a real protest that shows he is deeper in the poo than we even realize.

I, for one, pay no attention to the polls except within the last week of the election, and even then they are suspect.

At least I THINK that is what they were talking about. My mom is a huge supporter of Barack but she was making fun of him by repeating what a radio show was saying about him. Don’t expect this trend to reverse anytime soon. In fact I think this time next week McCain is down by 10-15%. It’s going to be a landslide for Obama, at least in the popular vote. McCain will lose every swing state I think and Obama will crusie to well over 300 EV’s.

The reason is 1) this crap on Wall Street and in the banks. Bush has looked inept on it, even though the dems are more to blame. Then McCain made huge gaffe by saying the fundmentals of the economy are strong (even if it is pretty accurate) That statement is the tunring point in this election. It’s equivelent to Michael Dukakis in the tank back in 1988. 2) the Democrats and MSM have been highly successful in casting doubt on Sarah Palin and have turned her into a scandal ridden candidate

The attacks will continue to come and get even worse. Team McCain have proven to be just as inept as the Bush camp was at handling this. They just lay there and take it. They have allowed the Democrats to take an extraoridnary candidate like Sarah Palin and turn her into a scandal infested liar. No one has hit back even though there is so much to hit Obama on. Not once have you heard John McCain or Sarah Palin say “Tony Rezko”, “Bill Ayers”, “Jeremiah Wright” or “the Logan Act”. Not once. It pisses me off to no end. Obama is enjoying high favorable numbers and he doesn’t deserve them. Sarah Palins favorables are tanking fast and she doesn’t deserve it. This sucks!

If you thought Bill Clinton sold this country out, you haven’t seen nothing yet. After Obama puts his hand on the Qu’ran and takes the oath of office he is going to destroy us. We’ll have a nuclear Iran, in fact, we’ll probably help them get there. Israel will be wiped off the face of the planet. He’ll make sure he can do all he can to tank the economy completely so he can impliment his socilaist manifesto. Then after that, don’t be surprised if 2008 was the last year we had a Presidential election.

Maybe I am paranoid, but I don’t like the way this looks at all.

Agreeing with freeptards, amazing. Odd mix of realism and pure paranoia in this guys post - I can guess exactly what he's looking at (electorally, the rest of the post is insane), I see it all over the numbers. The real potential for a "break" of support in Obama's favor. There's a path to landslide there and the Obama team is headed straight down that road.

It was fun the read the desperation. They are getting it, actually.

McCain has one week to redo his entire campaign, he can't just slime his way into the WH, and after the first debate without some serious gains he will be floundering bad, and like rats from sinking things...

Gobama.

51. This one was just too funny-
From that thread, yes I read most of it-

His desperate ploy yesterday of having 20 young blacks pretend to be protesting him shows how scared he is, and I firmly believe it was a setup and not a real protest. If it was a real protest that shows he is deeper in the poo than we even realize.

What an idiot. This guy thinks Obama paid the protesters at his rally yesterday. This guy is in the wrong job whatever it is, he needs to be a pugdant on MSM right now.

I’m not worried a bit...I work with racist democrats (union)...and I know for a fact that many of them wont vote for a black man.....ever...

When they are polled...they LIE.

Even I got excited about Palin at first... And I still like her a lot... But I can not get passed Macaca.

As a social-conservative first, I still feel the GOP should lose because only then there will be a deep examination of what this party stands for. If Macaca were to win, then the conclusion would be that the party would have moved to the left - taking along with it social-values voters, who once again would have demonstrated that their "princiles," were all just talk, hot air and nothing else when it came down to it.

The other aspect why they should lose, is simply performance. Those of us who can be honest enough, have to admit that the Reps fu*** ** big time beginning with GWB's failure, to many of us unforgivable, to have fixed Illegal Immigration the right way... Instead he moved to the left and chastised us instead!... And why? Because above all, GW is owned by corporations. Any wonder the idiot's miserable approval ratings even by his own party?

And what about the melting down of the financial system... Does anyone really believe that our representatives HAD NO IDEA THIS COULD HAPPEN?... Or perhaps, as they usually do, LOOKED THE OTHER WAY, so that they all could get richer at the expense of the poor saps who bought into a buying frenzy thinking they were making the right choices. I could go on but I better stop because I am feeling too disgusted already.

74. I just returned from the digital siberia, and they're pissed and arguing
It's a lower syllabic version of the McLaughon report: Lots of capital letters and only a couple of people who are attempting to explain that B* is the boss and therefore to blame.

No mention at all of deregulation. In fact, some there think the problem is that banksa are still too regulated, and need to be left to roam free and graze at will.

But there's alot of fear and anger, and no one over there has any concrete explanations of Gramp's plans to fix anything. Some of them say they don't think he knows how, and wish Sarah were the presidential candidate. I don't know what it is with these mouth breathers, but, they are convinced she's gotten out of the 4th grade honestly.
