Bush files suit to stop those nasty 527s from picking on him
Yep, it's true!

http://www.tribnet.com/24hour/politics/story/1615319p-9292575c.html

NEW YORK (September 1, 9:34 am PDT) - President Bush's campaign asked a court Wednesday to force the Federal Election Commission to act on its complaints against anti-Bush groups spending millions of dollars in the presidential race, arguing that the FEC is failing to do its job.

In a lawsuit filed in U.S. District Court in Washington, the campaign argued that the FEC is taking too long to address what the campaign calls illegal spending of corporate, union and big individual donations to influence the presidential race. Its lawsuit seeks a preliminary injunction that would force the commission to act on its March complaint within 30 days. After that, the campaign could sue to block the groups' activities through court action rather than relying on the FEC.

"To prevent these 527s from continuing to violate federal election laws, we have asked the federal court to step in and order the FEC to act," said Tom Josefiak, general counsel for the Bush-Cheney campaign.

Outside groups trying to deny Bush a second term have spent more than $60 million on advertising, far outstripping organizations sympathetic to the president that have vowed a late campaign drive to match their rivals.

More recently, the group Swift Boat Veterans for Truth has aired ads challenging Democratic Sen. John Kerry's decorated Vietnam War record.

3. Hilariously, MoveOn is a PAC, not a 527
so it won't affect them at all....

Meanwhile, it's hard to see how 527s are breaking election laws, since Chimpy signed the bill into law that created them in the first place.

4. I agree ... Make all campaign ads illegal ...
and replace them with debates. 2 debates per week for about 8-10 weeks before the election.

Hold the debates whether the candidates are there or not.

Cheers

5. Another day
Another frivilous Bush lawsuit. He could become a one man tort reform by no longer suing every time he doesnt get his way.

6. See Chimpy run to the courthouse. Again
Run, Chimpy run.

Whoops, don't trip on your anti-trial lawyer rhetoric. Oh no!

Trip, Chimpy trip.
Fall, Chimpy fall.
Oh, Chimpy!

7. Isn't this law suit too late? New FEC rules begin tomorrow!
I almost forgot, but received an email today describing the new rules that are effective beginning 60 days before election day. Sounds to me like all this is moot for this year, and probably just a publicity ploy to make the Am people believe their dear shrub is really trying.

8. Bush hates trial lawyers - except every day when he files lawsuits!
Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 03:06 PM by Democat
Unbelievable hypocrisy that Kerry should not let go without a few attacks.

Bush is against free speech and he is supporting lawyers.

9. Wouldn't that backfire on him?
If he shut down the 527's wouldn't the swiftliars also be put out of business?

Without the swiftliars bush would have nothing, so isn't it against his interest to shut down all 527's?

Or could the shrub shut down just the 527's he doesn't like? I wouldn't put it past him!
