2. It's disgusting.

I haven't turned it off since yesterday.

Corporate media needs to be bombarded with this information.

Use the corporate media blaster.

A friend in NYC told me WBAI (Pacifica) is covering it.

3. Shame on the congressional Democrats for being MIA on this issue
They should be holding a press conference AT Pier 57.

Being arrested for violence is one thing but these were PEACEFUL protesters being subjected to DANGEROUS conditions.

4. simple...
They don't care about the actual arrests or charges, they just want to detain 'troublemakers' until after the convention is over.

Hearing about G. Gordon Liddy's self-confessed plans to kidnap suspected protesters, drug 'em and leave 'em in Mexico (no shit, the words came right from his mouth) back in the Nixon era clarified this for me. It's hard to kidnap, drug, and send someone to Mexico, but to stuff 'em in a building for a few days under 'charges' accomplishes the same mission with less hassle. Free Speech, Republican style.

7. Peacefully? Uh...
Maybe most of them, yes, but my brother is there and I guarantee you that there are a LOT of our party members there who are making us look FOOLISH.

Protesters lay down in the middle of Broadway in New York, August 31, 2004 in a 'die-in' and await arrest. There have been numerous arrests all over the city of protesters demonstrating against the Republican National Convention. (Peaceful, but they're actually ASKING to be arrested - go figure)

I have to ask why those who are arrested are always the... well... "unkempt" and "stereotypical hippie" types. We need to show that the Democratic party isn't all this - it's so much more. Frankly, I am ASHAMED to be associated with many of these who are staging violent and dangerous protests and getting arrested in the process. How does that portray us and our causes? :(

8. You obviously don't know WHAT you are talking about.
I suggest you go to nyc.indymedia.org and LEARN about what has been happening over the past 36 hours.

MOST people detained have done NOTHING wrong, have been following instructions about marching 2X2 down the sidewalk, and have been swept up by the police for NO good reason.

Exactly why my husband is harassed ALL the time by police....even while just walking down the sidewalk...(what we were doing when arrested in D.C a few years ago..) because he has long hair and a goatee...because he wears political t-shirts.....and goddess forbid if I wear a "dew-rag" or colorful hat in the car....here comes the blinky lights and "I smell marijuana in the car" from Officer "friendly"......yet my husband is an electrical engineer for a international LARGE company and I am a medical/training professional..both of us just happen to love our country and what it USED to stand for......and like to DRESS in what WE find to be COMFORTABLE....which to you "conservative types" is deemed "hippie" and "unkempt".....hhhhmmmmm small minded is what I call THAT kind of thinking.....

32. You are ashamed? Then vote for *
These protesters are modern American heroes, imo. If Kerry and his coterie had a shred of simple human decency, he'd speak up on their behald (much like JFK called Martin Luther King in jail during the 1960 campaign).

If you don't think putting your body and life on the line for your beliefs is heroic, then why don't you join Zell Miller and his coterie?

9. Anyone interested - This letter is available.

I encourage anyone who wants to draft a similar letter, or use this one, and SEND IT OUT.

Attention News Director;

As an American who supports the First Amendment to the United States Constitution, the very cornerstone on which the media is built; it is troubling that your network is ignoring the criminal treatment of peaceful protesters in New York City during this Republican National Convention.

Your network apparently has no compunction about allowing paid political operatives to use your airtime to advance their agenda, but when it comes to ordinary Americans exercising their own First Amendment right to peacefully assemble; your network has turned deaf, dumb and blind.

Thousands of people are being held illegally at Pier 57 in New York City. They are being denied water, medical attention, food, and legal representation.

This is the story in New York City, not the green zone around Madison Square Garden, or the latest Republican talking points.

I ask you as a concerned American to remember why you became a journalist in the first place. Was it to repeat verbatim the spin of one political party? Or was it to honestly report the facts?

Please consider reporting the facts.

Thank you.

29. standard, I've unfortunately found
I was arrested in DC with my husband a couple of years ago...and we were NEVER read rights..(Miranda) we were denied phone calls ("ya'll watch too much t.v....a phone call is NOT a right")Denied food and water for days......(amongst other things) beaten and falsely accused of Assaulting a Police Officer (NEITHER of us raised a finger and we BOTH, in fact, were bruised and injured during our "arrest".....and the conditions in the "jail" were horrid and would fail ANY health inspection......

It's all part of the mind-fuck/"torture" given to "criminals" (there is REALLY no "innocent until proved guilty" in this country...) by the "Law" (bullies in charge)

get used to it, ya'll...more and worse is comin in W's new Amerika

Edited on Wed Sep-01-04 03:45 PM by jackstraw45
From the Moony Washington Times:

http://www.washingtontimes.com/national/20040828-120756-7018r.htm

"Police and security guards around the convention hall watch the masses constantly, and, after the convention starts, those who misbehave could end up at Chelsea Pier 57 on the Hudson River, which has been converted into a temporary jail in case mayhem ensues. "

Those here who are dismissing these mass arrests as "dirty hippies" violently getting what they deserve are MAKING A BIG MISTAKE.

These are NOT anarchists...these were almost ALL peaceful protesters WALKING down the street or gathering in public places.

34. asbestos is over rated as a danger
Unless there is active demolition and the protesters are rubbing up against asbestos insualtion, there is no asbestos danger. Most asbestos is 100% safe where it is until you disturb it. Dunno about the oil on the ground in a parking garage but I would imagine oil stains in public garages are not any worse than what these prisoners are being expsoed to.

now if you want to talk dangerous materials, lets talk lead paint lead paint.....

27. Word out here is, the RNC, NOT NYPD, is responsible for this gulag
This came in an email from Not In Our Name-Hawai'i, (so no link) :

We have just learned that five NION supporters from Hawaii are being processed and released after being held in a detention center becoming known as Guantanamo on the Hudson. After being trapped in a police pen during a police sweep, and then arrested without being given any warning or opportunity to disperse, they have been held in appalling conditions.

The detention center is a former bus garage on Pier 57. The holding pens are made of chain link fence with razor wire on top. Each pen has only two portable toilets and few benches. Most people have to sleep on the floor. There are large areas where oil from the buses have been spilled. Arrestees have gone for many hours without access to food, water, phones or lawyers. There is a question about whether the building has an operable fire-suppression system.

When a Hawaii supporter called the NYPD to inquire about the adequacy of the fire-suppression system, she was given the official number of the RNC and was told that the Republican National Convention had control over the detention center. She then called the RNC. An official with the RNC informed her that he didn't know whether the building had such a system, and told her that the detention center wasn't the Hilton, and that those arrested were criminals anyway. This official attitude toward non-violent protesters attempting to exercise free speech is outrageous and yet another example of the very thing the protesters are speaking out against! And since when does a convention provide its own detention center?

Un-freepin'-believable! So NYPD has just turned the protesters over to RNC thugs?! I detect the gnarled hand of Bloomberg (or "Tiny Fascist" to a not-too-liberal NY friend!) behind this! :grr:

"Wasn't the Hilton"?! "Criminals anyway"? Cripes, at this rate we're gonna have our own desaparecidos before long.
