Swift Boat Liars and MoveOnPAC
Why does the press keep incorrectly identifying MoveOn as a 527? They are not, they are a Political Action Committee. They abide by an entirely different set of rules per campaigns.

It sets my teeth on edge every time I hear the two mentioned together in both the mainstream (i.e., conservative) and the progressive press (such as AAR).

7. I agree, but it is just so LAZY
not that that is any surprise.

Fact is, they can't identify a well-known 527 that is against Bush (since technically they can't be "for" a candidate) so they pull MoveOn into the mix.

4. Well, don't worry about it...
They'll just be really surprised when Bush shuts down 527's and is stunned to discover that he hasn't shut down MoveOn. ;)

5. Why does the press do that?
In some cases, becuase they are liars trying to get Bush elected. In others, because they have heard the lie so many times they believe it without questioning it.

6. Why doesn't MoveOn do an ad against the SBVT?
It must be done.

8. Partly, they are
but I don't know if the 527 does the ads directly- seems like too fine a distinction to matter.

from the site:

The MoveOn family of organizations consists of three entities. MoveOn.org, a 501(c)(4) organization, primarily focuses on education and advocacy on important national issues. MoveOn PAC, a federal PAC, primarily helps members elect candidates who reflect our values. And MoveOn.org Voter Fund, a 527 organization, primarily educates voters on the positions, records, views, and qualifications of candidates for public office.
